There she is, Miss’d America. This past weekend, the new Miss’d America was crowned at the historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The pageant, which spoofs the real Miss America broadcast live from Vegas one day earlier, attracts audiences from around the country to watch drag queens compete for the crown in a one-night-only parade of comedy and talent.

This year, 32-year-old Miss Kitty Hiccups (also known as David Hyland) became top banana, beating out seven fierce competitors on the catwalk in an evening gown competition, as well as interview, swimsuit and talent shows. Meow.

Created in 1993 by John Shutz and Gary Hill for the folks who worked behind the scenes of the real Miss America competition, which had been held for years in the same venue, the irreverent pageant raises money for charities around the country.

Lesbian comedian Suzanne Westenhoefer – a native of Lancaster County – hosted this year’s fete, with special guests including Philadelphia’s own Robert “Sandy” Beach, the writer and director of the show who helped crown the new queen.

Last year’s winner was Michelle Dupree (Scott Cooper) of Bergen County, N.J., who was in attendance on Sunday night for the bawdy Boardwalk Empire-themed event.
