The Death of the Yuppie. (Finally.)
“To end this crisis, we must end the culture of ‘anything goes’ that helped create it,” Obama said in January, talking about the economy just before his inauguration. “It’s time to trade old habits for a new spirit of responsibility.”
Was that a sigh of relief I just heard out there? Maybe it was. Maybe the economic downturn and new zeitgeist are the way out we’ve been looking for — an opportunity to cancel the trip to Aruba and hop off the fast-track treadmill to nowhere we’ve been on for 25 years. Maybe it’s our generation’s chance to be defined not by the stuff we bought, but by the stuff we did.
