Local Spotlight: Street Star Custom Clothing

We can’t say we were surprised to learn that Bobby Scalia Jr., the guy behind the flashy line Street Star Custom Clothing is a tattoo-aholic. After all, his designs — one-of-a-kind garments for men and women — are emblazoned with inked-up icons (think bull dogs, angel wings and flying fish) and phrases (“Live Fast, Die Young” and “Death Before Dishonor”) that also play homage to his home, South Philly. And they are anything but understated: Tie-dyed tees, key-hole LBDs, metallic and Swarovski crystal-ed up. It’s grit meets glitz.

The 33-year-old started his collection about two years ago, after he began churning out the pieces in his parents’ screen-printing store. Now he’s looking to spread his Street Star line beyond the Philly area, while continuing to fill custom orders on everything from track jackets and blazers to racy corsets.Various crystal arrangements and lettering techniques set the price for each piece; but average t-shirt designs start at $35, and can go for $65-$85, while hoodies start at $100. Scalia’s gear is available for purchase online (www.streetstaronline.com) and at Mr. Tees, 1201 Snyder Avenue, 215-463- 3393.
