The Best B&B Getaways: Haddonfield Inn
10 miles from Philadelphia (20 minutes by car)
You’d never know it in the midst of Center City, but 10 or so miles southeast of Billy Penn rests a retreat with all the quaint a body can handle: romantic Victorian setting; belly-busting breakfasts of blueberry pancakes or eggs Florentine; cozy quarters with triple-sheeted beds. And while the Haddonfield Inn is heavy on homey charm, owners Nancy and Fred Chorpita, who started the business 17 years ago, have totally dodged the cutesy bullet, doing the rooms up in subtle international themes (the pale green DubLynn room is especially gorgeous) and outfitting them with all the modern luxuries you want on a vacation, like in-room bathrooms with whirlpools.
The Chorpitas, practiced hosts, are attentive without hovering; after serving breakfast, they’ll leave you to lounge in your room or the first-floor living room, or to stroll the town’s shopping district, which is 10 minutes by foot from the inn and packed with boutiques, jewelry stores, art galleries and day spas, as well as plenty of dining options for lunch and dinner, which the inn doesn’t serve except through special arrangement. It’s no loss, really: Nearby Crepe & Ribbon offers not-to-miss sweet and savory crepes; and the most stellar dinner choices include seafood-centric Little Tuna and sushi at three-time Best of Philly winner Fuji.

Or not to green: The Chorpitas provide a $25 gas credit to guests who come by car.
Insider tip: In addition to hosting events (i.e., weddings, showers), the Chorpitas like a dinner party: Pair up with other couples for a private catered 4-course dinner in the inn’s formal dining room.
