A Salon to Call Home

Giovanni Mele spent this past New Year’s Eve — incidentally, his birthday — moving his decade-old hair salon, Giovanni & Pileggi, to a new home on South 16th Street. Although, technically, it’s an old home. The five-story, 4,800-square-foot townhouse is 200 years old. (See the digs for yourself à la virtual tour on their website) Historians cringing at the thought of a restoration-turned-salon can relax — Mele has embraced everything of the former family home, replete with its double six-pane windows, mantles in almost every room, original hardwood floors and outside garden, making haircuts feel oh-so-at-home. But he’s also added some serious flava (he is Italian, after all) like the massive modern chandeliers hanging above the tiger-print-carpeted staircases. The new location brings some new services, too — waxes, massages, manis and pedis — in addition to G&P’s award-winning hair treatments, cuts and styling.
