A&E: RuPaul, Rocky Horror and … Kinky Quizzo?
This summer's movie selection has basically consisted of sequels, threequels, Bruce Willis and a gourmet rat. So for a break from the ho-hum Hollywood hits, try the 13th Annual Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, which kicks off July 12th. The festival will showcase nearly 200 films from as far away as Nigeria and South Korea. Highlights include Itty Bitty Titty Committee, a romantic comedy about radical lesbian feminists; The Witnesses, which will compete at the Berlin International Film Festival; and The Bubble, a drama depicting a gay romance between an Israeli and a Palestinian in Tel Aviv. Between films, catch one of the 15 events planned around the city, including an interactive viewing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Trocadero and Kinky Quizzo, a gay-trivia tournament at the Valanni Restaurant & Lounge. Also, celebrity watchers should be on alert as famed drag queen RuPaul and Rent's Anthony Rapp are both slated to make appearances. And for those who still have that Hollywood fix, you're in luck — the festival includes an advance screening of the new musical remake Hairspray, starring John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer.
