It’s been almost 25 years since school friends Anthony Kiedis and Michael Balzary — later know as “Flea” — started bouncing around California nightclub stages clothed in nothing but strategically placed tube socks. From their breakthrough 1989 record, Mother’s Milk, through recurring personnel changes in the 1990s and their smash 1999 album, Californication, the band has never stopped delivering.

Though the single “Dani California,” from the group’s most recent 28-track double album, Stadium Arcadium, played everywhere this summer, there’s evidence that the Peppers are going way beyond their touchstone California theme. Guitarist John Frusciante says, “Many of the gods, goddesses, angels, demons and elements of the universe have conspired to send messages from beyond through the Red Hot Chili Peppers for the current civilization.” Mm-hmm.
