PHILLY QFEST: Opening Party + G.B.F.

Darren Stein's high school comedy and a Prom Night Gone Wild-themed soiree kick off the 19th annual QFest

Darren Stein's high-school comedy G.B.F. kicks off Philly's 19th annual QFest.

We’ve been waiting for it all year long, and QFest, our own little slice of gay-movie heaven is finally here. Each day through the run of the festival (July 11 to July 22), I’m going to put together a list of what’s happening “Tomorrow @ QFest” — from that day’s best screenings to the handful of festival-specific parties taking place over the next two weeks. And just to make your movie-picking decision that much easier, I’m going to include trailers and reviews for each film. Sound good?

Tomorrow, July 11, is the first day of the festival and it’s kicking off with:

G.B.F. (98 min., U.S.): “Darren Stein’s hilarious high-school comedy about a shy gay teen who becomes the object d‘accessory for three scheming beauties who desperately need a gay best friend to complete their look.” Playing Thu., July 11, 7:15 p.m. and Sat., July 13, 2:45 p.m., Ritz East, 125 S. Second St. Read the Advocate’s review here.

G.B.F. OPENING NIGHT PARTY: To celebrate the opening-night film, festival organizers have put together this “Prom Night Gone Wild” bash featuring performances by Brittany Lynn and her Drag Mafia and appearances by G.B.F. stars Paul Iacono, Xosha Roquemore and Taylor Frey. 9:30 p.m.-2 a.m., $25 (party only) to $40 (film and party combo), Lit Ultra Bar, 460 N. Second St.
