Threesome: Holiday Style Picks

Secrets to a very special Thanksgiving holiday. By Matthew Izzo

Bruce Yelk’s annual Pink Pub Crawl is a tradition in Philly every season. So before you pick up that Henry VIII-size turkey leg tomorrow, hit the Gayborhood tonight for some sips with old friends and new. Absolut will be churning out vodka drinks.

The crawl gets started at 8:45 p.m. at Q Lounge, then moves onto Tabu (10:15 p.m.), Woody’s (11:30 p.m.) and wraps it up at Voyeur (12:30 a.m.) where you can start celebrating Thanksgiving early with DJ Carl Michaels spinning Tripp on the main floor and Mega Trivia in the Ruby Lounge.

Tickets are only $25 for folks sporting pink on this, one of the biggest bar nights of the year.

If you’re concerned your cooking skills aren’t Iron Chef-worthy, then visit Garces Trading Company for all the Thanksgiving dinner fixins you crave and then some. My favorite must-have is the truffle oil. Just add a little to your mashed potatoes and you will most definitely fall into food heaven.

Iron Chef Garces prepares his turkey in the same style as a traditional Yucatán dish called cochinita pibil, a slow-roast marinate with citrus and annatto paste (the paste is made from achiote seeds, a condiment that adds a beautiful orange hue to foods). Brining and marinating the bird makes it especially succulent, not to mention a gorgeous centerpiece on your table. Trust me, your guests will be impressed.

After your turkey hangover wears off, go back to black for some serious shopping on Friday. Most stores in Philadelphia open early for Black Friday sales where you can save anywhere from 20 to 70 percent off merch that you’ve been craving all season. This goes for home goods, clothes and gifts around town.

As a small business owner, I know that independent shops are a life force in our city. They give Philly its unique character and charm. So when you make your shopping list this week, don’t forget to do some retail therapy at your favorite neighborhood boutiques, vintage stores and galleries. You may not think so, but just about every indie-owned shop (small and large) is offering some of the best, most original deals in town. Happy Thanksgiving!
