Big Gay Ice Cream Opening As Early As Friday [UPDATED]

UPDATE [5/1/2015, 4:59 pm]: Big Gay Ice Cream opened a day earlier than we expected. They threw open the doors last night, on Thursday, April 30th. Here, a shot of the Big Gay Ice Cream crew, with owners Bryan Petroff and Douglas Quint.

ORIGINAL: Philly food writer Michael Klein stopped in to Philly’s Big Gay Ice Cream location this week, and he projects the New York-based treat shop could be open as early as Friday, May 1st. According to the board in the photo they sent, the shop will offer up everything from shakes to sundaes to specialty cones with sassy names like Salty Pimp, the Bea Arthur and American Gloss. It’s located near the intersection of Broad and South streets.

If you’d like to meet the owners, Bryan Petroff and Douglas Quint, they’ll be at Juniper Commons at 6 pm on Thursday to read and sign copies of their first cookbook, Big Gay Ice Cream: Saucy Stories & Frozen Treats: Going All the Way with Ice CreamThe event costs $50, and will include cocktails and a spread of hors d’oeuvres from Juniper Commons chefs. When the reading ends, the crowd will move down the block to have some ice cream at the shop—meaning you’ll be among the first in Philly to try it out. (Have a Salty Pimp for me.)

Foobooz tells us the cookbook features a year’s worth of ice cream recipes, “starting from freshman year with simple toppings and shoppings lists and concluding with senior year, where you can create your own sorbets and ice creams. It also includes some strange stories from the authors.”

More information on the book and event can be found here.
