The Internet has been abuzz this week after several blogs reported on a debate between Azealia Banks and Vice columnist Mitch Sunderland over the use of the word “faggot,” which she has used openly in the past. According to reports, this is what she tweeted to Sunderland following his inquiry about whether or not she’s homophobic:

” … even if i am a homophobe… so wat? [sic] i still make more $ than you.. still have an extra hole.. and still own everything. the harsh truth. you gay bloggers try waving the homophobia flag at me like women are not the original source of all things fabulous, feminine and clever. Like I said… I own AWWWWWLLLL of this. It’s mine.”

Ironically, Cutn Paste, a monthly LGBTQ dance party at The Bike Stop, is throwing an Azealia Banks tribute show tonight. The Facebook event page reads “we’re paying homage to Azealia Banks, who is killing it right now.” Awkward timing, huh?

Understandably, a fan reached out to Cutn Paste creators, DJ Nolita Selector and DJ Precolumbian, to see if they were thinking about switching up the theme following Banks’ remarks. This is how they responded:

While we aren’t down with the things that she said, this happened a while back and we’re hoping that her analysis has since grown and continues to grow. She’s still super young. Furthermore, as a queer womyn of color, Azealia Banks hasn’t been allowed a single pass while so many white gay men get to be misogynists and transphobic without getting vilified the way miss Banks has. Cutn Paste is two queer womyn of color – one of whom is trans. We are here to celebrate rad queers and womyn of color, none of us is perfect and we are still evolving in our analysis. But while she’s said some problematic things, she’s still a badass queer black womyn who has made immense contributions to hip-hop and queer culture.

I talked further with DJ Nolita who added that “people seem to forget [Banks] is a part of the LGBTQ community and [they] take her words out of context.”

The party is still on this evening at The Bike Stop starting at 10:00 p.m. For more information, click here.
