Philly AIDS Thrift Announces Expansion, Increases Monthly Donation to AIDS Fund
Queen Village secondhand megastore Philly AIDS Thrift is turning eight this weekend, and it’s celebrating with a couple exciting announcements:
First up, owners just signed a lease to take over more space on the second floor of the location on Fifth Street, expanding the shop by 50 percent. Manager Tom Brennan says the new area has a “cool layout” that equates to “more space for more stuff, and better arrangement and display of what we already have.” He says they’ll be hauling things over in October and will open it to shoppers in November.
More space means more sells for the shop, which, as you probably know, donates a huge chunk of its profits to Philly HIV/AIDS service organizations. Brennan says the PAT board just voted to increase its monthly donation to regular benefactor AIDS Fund by $2,500, bringing the new monthly total to $17,500. (That’s $210,000 a year!) “This is our largest-ever increase and is a testament to how successful the store’s move to our new home two years ago has been,” he says. In February, PAT will celebrate a donation total of $750K since it opened in 2005.
To mark its birthday and all these new developments, PAT will host a block party on Sat., Sept. 28, complete with live music, food trucks, special sales and, OMG, a Justin Bieber bouncy house. Stay tuned to this week’s Weekend Roundup for more info on that.
