TONIGHT: The Dumpsta Players Do Dionne Warwick

The irreverent experimental theater troupe takes on our favorite Psychic Friend.

Earlier today I posted a video of Aiden James’s remake of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” and now, by mere coincidence, we have news on another Philly group covering Nippy’s raspy voiced cuz, the fabulous Dionne Warwick.

Tonight, The Dumpsta Players (DP) are back with a new show, and this time they’re skewering paying tribute to Burt Bacharach songbird Dionne Warwick. Why her, you ask? DP founder Ricky Paul (aka DJ K-Tell) explains that, “She’s a fine example of soulful sophistication, a superb and subtle interpreter set amidst the cacophonous roar of the ’60s that any drag queen would aspire to emulate. The Psychic Friends Network and Solid Gold reruns make her ripe for Dumpsta whimsy.”

He says to “expect fierce fashion statements, groovy production”  and Venture Inn DJ Dave Amodei will be playing all kinds of ’60s tunes. The show starts at 11 p.m. at Bob and Barbara’s (1509 South St.). Proceeds from the $1.99 cover charge will benefit Philly AIDS Thrift. Enjoy a few more stills from the production below:
