PLAYDAR: These Divas Will Sing the Soundtrack to Your Fall
Last week, we told you what the boys will be bringing to radio airwaves this fall, but if our predictions are correct, the autumn months will be dominated by the ladies. Here’s what to expect from the imminent diva-pocalypse:
Sixteen-year-old singer and native New Zealander Lorde has been taking America — and the iTunes charts — by storm with her hypnotic single “Royals.” In a season that will no doubt be dominated by longer-career-charting divas, she has had no problem fitting in with the big dogs. Her EP “The Love Club” has been gaining momentum recently and will certainly be something you’ll hear more of over the next few months.
In early-August Katy Perry and Lady Gaga got the fall-music hype-train rolling with “Roar” and “Applause.” Ms. Perry will include “Roar” on her next album, Prism, which, released on Oct. 22, and will be a darker departure from her 2010 candy-coated Teenage Dream. But never fear, the album still promises to contain hit after hit as Perry has once again re-teamed with Dream hitmakers Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Lady Gaga will unleash Artpop on Nov. 11. If “Manicure” and “Swine,” two tracks she debuted at a recent iTunes music festival, are any indication, the new album will be rife with a dance-rock edge.
Now, two of our favorite Disney girls gone bad. Britney Spears is gearing up to release her eighth studio album this fall as well as announce her long rumored Vegas residency. This week, she revealed on Twitter that Sept 16 will see the release of her brand new single, “Work Bitch”, which some say will sample legendary drag diva Rupaul’s 1993 classic “Supermodel.” Can anyone say gayest song of the year?! With her now infamous VMA performance and the just-released, record-breaking video for latest single “Wrecking Ball,” Miley Cyrus is safely the world’s most talked about pop princess. Her new album, Bangerz, will twerk on shelves on Oct. 8, and, coincidentally, will feature a duet with Ms. Spears called “SMS.” Can’t wait for that one.
All hail the godmothers of pop: Cher is just two weeks away from releasing Closer To The Truth, her 26th (take that, Miley!) album. The record’s lead single, “Woman’s World” has been dancing on top of the club charts, and the album is expected to offer more club bangers along with some classic Cher ballads. Celine Dion will release Loved Me Back To Life on Nov. 24. The well-reviewed, eponymous lead single has been gaining plenty of buzz, and her new stuff should have that chest-pounding Celine-style that we all have come to love.
Other releases of note include Kelly Clarkson’s first holiday album (Wrapped In Red, Oct 26), M.I.A. (Matang, Nov 5), Janelle Monaé, (Electric Lady, Sept. 10), Haim (Days Are Gone, Sept. 30) and Icona Pop (This Is … Icona Pop, Sept. 24), who I interviewed this week prior to their upcoming show at the TLA.
