We’re Not in Kansas Anymore

At nine stories high and almost 200 feet wide, the rainbow being installed at the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, Calif., pays a larger than life tribute to one of the most famous films ever to be shot there: The Wizard of Oz. Friends of Dorothy (wink wink) are sure to appreciate the not-so-subtle nod. According to the Culver City Times, the rainbow will be built on the same studio lot where the Judy Garland flick was filmed more than 70 years ago.

The concept was designed by artist Tony Tasset who describes the rainbow as an installation that speaks to “optimism and well-being associated with rainbows in general, and more specifically with the rainbow in popular culture as imagined in the iconic Wizard of Oz film.” We also suspect the rainbow is a bit of a gay tribute since Garland became such an icon within the community (hello, Judy Garland Park).

The sculpture – which will be unveiled sometime next year – will be built using a welded steel truss with aluminum panels finished with colorful paint that’s expected to withstand light and weather for at least two decades, the newspaper reports.

We’re just waiting for Jeff Koons to add a giant Toto sculpture a la “Puppy” and maybe some ruby slippers and flying monkeys, too.
