Music Video Confronts DADT

Out singer Tom Goss launches video about gay service members

Openly gay singer Tom Goss released a new video for his song “Lover,” which features the singer/songwriter in a same-sex relationship with a U.S. Army soldier. “It stars three soldiers discharged as a result of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,'” says Goss in an e-mail to G Philly. The song, reminiscent of the easy musical stylings of James Blunt, tells the story of a relationship going against the odds.

“In February, when Matt Alber and I sat down to pen an anthem about ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ I never would have realized then how deeply DADT would impact me,” Goss writes on his website. “For months I heard stories from service members and their partners about the reality of military life, deployment, war and being left behind.”

The video features Goss as a bereaved partner of a soldier (played by actor Ben Horen) killed while on duty in Afghanistan. Among those coming to his aid are several medics who were discharged for DADT’s policy: Mike Almy, David Hall and Danny Hernandez.
