Clearing Up the Reid-Barkley-Eagles Controversy

When the Eagles moved up in the fourth round to take Matt Barkley with the No. 98 pick, some wondered whether they were trying to jump ahead of Andy Reid and the Chiefs.

The Eagles originally had the 101st pick, while Kansas City had No. 99.

Reid was asked about the Chiefs potentially targeting Barkley and seemed to take a little jab at his former team.

Measurables Matter: Kelly Wanted Bigger Players

As it turns out, the foundation for the Eagles’ 2013 draft was laid during a meeting at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Jan. 5.

That’s when Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski first interviewed Chip Kelly about the Eagles’ head-coaching position.

“During the interview process, he talked about having position specifics, which is not uncommon for coaches,” Roseman said. “Then when he got here, we sat down together, and then as a staff, talked about what we were looking for and what he was looking for and what we had. Then we made a template up, and we gave it to all our scouts and all of our coaches, and we said this is what we’re looking for at this position, and that’s what we’re going to try to get.”

It was a change for the entire personnel staff. Suddenly, they were looking for players who fit Kelly’s mold, not Andy Reid’s. And the new guy had his own vision. He wanted length on defense. He wanted athleticism on the offensive line. He preferred his quarterback to have big hands.

Kelly Says Barkley’s Injury, Arm Strength Not An Issue

The biggest question about Matt Barkley is arm strength. That was the case before he separated his shoulder on November 17 against UCLA, and even more so since.

Chip Kelly, though, has seen that arm up close — Barkley threw for 484 yards and five touchdowns against Oregon two weeks before he injured that shoulder — and isn’t concerned.

“When I’ve watched him in person I think he can deliver the ball,” said Kelly. “Sometimes the arm strength aspect of it is overrated because people are trying to paint it with a brush. We’re not trying to knock over milk cartons at a county fair. It’s can you put the ball in the right spot at the right time. And I’ve seen that over the course of Matt’s career.”

Eagles Take DT Bennie Logan In Third Round

The Eagles flipped to the defensive side of the ball in the third round, selecting LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan.

Logan (6-2, 309) was a two-year starter at tackle for LSU. He finished the 2012 season with 45 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks. Playing alongside the likes of Michael Brockers, he was overshadowed for much of his time with the Tigers. But Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman identified a versatile lineman that they believe can be a three-down player.

“He can push the pocket from the inside,” said Kelly. “Really kind of a guy that we targeted. He was a second-round kid for us. We were just kind of holding our breath there as he fell. I think it will be a great fit for Billy Davis and what he is going to do with those guys.”

A Couple Notes On Geno Smith

A couple notes and thoughts while we wait to see if Geno Smith is coming to Philly:

— Yesterday was Smith’s mother’s birthday. Obviously, it wasn’t as festive of an occasion as everyone had hoped. That was part of the reason why Smith planned on leaving New York City instead of sticking around for Day 2 of the draft, according to a source who was with the signal-caller Thursday night. He didn’t want his mom to be upset, and planned on going home with her and watching the draft there.
