This winter, Philly will lose one of its most distinctive restaurants. Holly Ricciardi, baker-owner at Magpie Artisan Pies in Graduate Hospital, has announced that she’ll close the all-pie spot as of Christmas Eve.

Ricciardi opened Magpie six years ago at 1622 South Street with the goal of bringing Philly a unique concept it didn’t have — a brick-and-mortar homage to pie.

The business isn’t in trouble, she said, and there are no problems with landlords, repairs, or other typical issues that can cause a successful restaurant to close. In fact, business is good.

It’s just that after selling 30,000 Best of Philly-winning[2] pies, writing a cookbook, and teaching pie-making classes, Ricciardi feels she’s accomplished her goal of sharing a love of pie with Philadelphia and is ready to move on to something new. No word on what that is yet.

We have less than a month of Magpie left — the shop’s last service will be on December 23rd — so get down there for a goodbye slice or pie milkshake while you can.
