Today Bon Appetit rolled out its 50 Best New Restaurants for 2016 and two Philadelphia restaurants make the cut. One might have been expected, the other is a surprise but a mighty deserving one. Slick Wm. Mulherin’s Sons is the expected choice, what with its gorgeous redo of a century old building and with celebrated chef Chris Painter in the kitchen. The magazine praises the pastas and pizza while also remarking on the cocktails coming from the bar.

The second Philadelphia restaurant is Benjamin Miller’s and Christina Martinez’s South Philly BarbacoaBon Appetit flips for the tortas, tacos, consommé and of course the barbacoa stating, “[b]efore long you have a taco in your left hand and spoon in your right, and you can’t think of a single place you’d rather be.” Pretty awesome praise for an idea born on a South Philadelphia sidewalk.

Last year Dizengoff and Townsend made the 50 list. In 2014, Eli Kulp’s Fork landed at #2. On August 16th, Bon Appetit will announce its top 10.
