If your Facebook feed is anything like mine this week it has been nothing but Pope maps and port-a-potties. That and some good people who are actually embracing the Pope coming to town and celebrating like its a blizzard.
Here are some of our favorite bar happenings this weekend.
We already told you about the Monk’s Cafe’s 24 religiously inspired beers on tap this weekend. But they are far from the only drinking establishment doing it up for the Pope.
Devil’s Den is doing a little Heaven and Hell thing with devilish beers to go with the saintly ones. Look for the likes of Lucifer and Sweet Baby Jesus to be among the beers pouring Friday through Sunday.
The Trestle Inn is hosting a week of bad habits. Every night the Callowhill Street bar is offering a twist on the Citywide Special. Get a taste of Heaven and Helles with a shot of Heaven Hill Bourbon and can of Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager for $5. The bar will also be hosting dance parties nightly through Saturday.
Tria Taproom is welcoming the Trappists this weekend. The Rittenhouse Square bar will have all four Trappist breweries that offer draft beer in America pouring. They’re offering special pricing on beers from Chimay, La Trappe, Spencer and Stift Engelszell. The Trappist beers will start pouring on Friday, September 25th.
All Tria Cafe locations are pouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines this weekend. Named for the “new house of the Pope,” Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an area of the Rhône where the pope resided in the 1300s. They will be pouring both white and red starting Friday.
Pub on Passyunk East (or POPE for short) is of course a logical destination for the plethora of Pope-themed beers brewed by local breweries. This weekend, stop in for a taste of Pope Dennis the Phyrst (named for owner Dennis Hewett) from Saucony Creek Brewing.
McGillin’s Olde Ale House, which opened during the reign of Pope Pius IX back in 1860 is all decked out in Papal gold and white. And the oldest bar in Philadelphia is celebrating like they do, by renaming martinis for the event. Stop in for a Popetini, Vatican Citywide, Sea of Galilee Fish & Chips, Pope Frites and more.
