Ryan Mathews will not participate in the Eagles’ final practice before their Sunday game against the Washington Redskins, Doug Pederson announced on Friday morning.

Philadelphia’s lead running back was seen leaving the NovaCare Complex shortly prior to Pederson’s press conference. The Eagles head coach explained Mathews has been excused from practice due to illness. So will Mathews play this weekend?

“Yeah, it just happened with me, so I haven’t really gotten with [head athletic trainer] Chris Peduzzi yet,” said Pederson. “Until I know more information, I’ll let you know. But as of right now, yes.”

Mathews leads the Eagles in carries (44), rushing yards (146), and touchdowns (3) this season. He also lead all rushers in fumbles (1) due to his big mistake against Detroit last Sunday.

In other news, Leodis McKelvin will practice on Friday after missing Wednesday and Thursday due to a hamstring injury he re-aggravated in the Lions game. Earlier this week, Pederson said he expects McKelvin to play against Washington. If the veteran cornerback can’t suit up, look for Ron Brooks and Jalen Mills to see an increase in playing time.

Fletcher Cox (ankle) and Bryan Braman (shoulder) are good to go this week. Both players missed Wednesday’s practice and Cox was limited on Thursday.

As for Washington, the 2015 division champions could be without one of their best offensive players. Starting tight end Jordan Reed missed two days of practice this week due to the sixth concussion of his playing career dating back to college. Rookie wide receiver Josh Doctson (achilles) has also been held out of practice this week.

UPDATE: After practice, McKelvin told reporters he’s likely to be a game-time decision on Sunday morning. He’s officially ruled as questionable. Meanwhile, Reed has been listed questionable on Washington’s final injury report. NFL insider Adam Schefter reports it will be a “major upset” if Reed plays this week. Bad news for Washington.
