These Philly Fitness Studios Are Hosting Outdoor Social Distancing Workouts

Here are the local boutique gyms turning to outdoor workouts in the yellow phase.

As the weather gets warmer and Philly gyms are still closed, several local fitness boutiques are taking matters into their own hands while the city remains in the yellow phase. In an attempt to move beyond virtual and live-streamed classes, studios in the area — a full list below — have started hosting outdoor workouts, so that clients can feel a sense of community IRL while practicing social distancing.

For example, Chestnut Hill Cycle Fitness (CHCF) and RIDE Spin, Barre & TRX in Southampton are both hosting outdoor classes in their studios’ parking lots in order to help maintain the six-feet rule. According to CHCF owner Alli Bradley, clients can expect a variety of classes — including yoga, bootcamp, and sculpting — seven days per week. Plus, they’ll all be offered before 9 a.m., so clients can beat the summer heat. RIDE will be offering a mix of early morning and evening workouts.

Ali Cook Jackson, owner of Never Give Up Training in Manayunk, says their decision to start the outdoor workouts was catalyzed by client feedback. “[Because of quarantine,] we’ve fully transitioned our classes online, but many of our members mentioned that they found it difficult to find the time or motivation to workout,” she says.

“When Philadelphia entered the yellow phase, we polled our members to gauge interest in outdoor workouts and we received an overwhelming ‘yes!’” In order to properly distance, Never Give Up’s outdoor sweat sessions have cone-designated workout spaces. Additionally, attendees are required to wear masks until class begins, use hand sanitizer before and after class, and bring their own mat if they wish to utilize one during the bodyweight workouts.

If you’re eager to rejoin in-person group fitness and interested in trying a class outside, check out the list of some Philly-area studios we found that are currently offering outdoor, socially distanced classes below. We couldn’t include all of them as studio schedules are changing rapidly, but we hope this list will get you started. Check with your local studio to see what their plans are in the near future!
