A New Giant Heirloom Market Is Opening in University City

And that means free samples all weekend.

For its 95th anniversary last October, Giant Food Stores announced its new store concept, Giant Heirloom Market. Shortly after, its first upscale urban market opened in Graduate Hospital — and there were lots of reasons to love it. And then in May, Giant revealed that three more Heirloom Markets would be opening throughout the city by the end of this year.

On Friday, August 2nd, the second Heirloom Market will open its doors to the public. The University City store — located at 3401 Chestnut Street — will host a grand opening celebration, starting with a community unveiling ceremony at 7:30 a.m. There’ll be remarks from Giant Food Stores president, Nick Bertram, and Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell. And then in true Philly fashion, a public pretzel-breaking will signal the store’s opening (because traditional ribbon-cutting is not this city’s style).

Following the ceremony, the public can officially step foot in the 9,950-square-foot market, with the first 250 customers receiving a Giant Heirloom Market tote bag. All day, you can enjoy Heirloom specialties like kombucha on tap, a DIY olive oil and vinegar blending station, an expansive sushi department, and a pretty extensive gourmet cheese section.

Because of the neighborhood’s on-the-go students, university faculty and staff, and hospital personnel, the University City market will feature more grab-and-go meals, gluten-free and plant-based options, and a curated selection of wine and beer, complete with a rapid bottle chiller for those BYO or stay-at-home nights. The fast-paced community is also why the UCity location is offering Giant Direct, Giant’s online grocery service that offers in-store pick-up and mobile delivery through Peapod.

The best part of the University City location’s grand opening? Product vendors will be offering free samples not just on opening day, but all weekend. You can find the full list of vendors below.
