Philly has an insanely wonderful fitness scene, but the truth is, many of us tend to stick to our own neighborhoods — we’ve all got our favorite corner coffee shops, yoga studios, healthy food, running trails, and more. That’s why we’re asking local fitness pros to give us a tour of their neighborhoods[1] — and to spill all their secrets on the hidden gems they can’t quit.

collingswood healthy foodI don’t know about all of you, but I love hearing a nutritionist’s opinion of the best and healthiest places to eat in the Philadelphia-area. Fortunately for us, Kate Glutz[2], a nutritionist at OnPoint Nutrition[3] and Collingswood, New Jersey resident agreed to share her top picks for the best and the healthiest options in her hometown.

In addition to being a nutritionist, Glutz is an avid runner and vegan, so she’s sprinkled in some vegan, running, and outdoor fun suggestions into her know-it-all guide to Collingswood.

Collingswood Healthy Food and Drinks

Coffee shop: “Grooveground[4] prides itself on being a contemporary coffee bar, café, and music store, all under one roof. My favorite thing about it is that they serve La Colombe coffee — a Philadelphia staple. I love grabbing a coffee and their veggie wrap — a great lunch of hummus, spring mix, roasted red peppers, red onion, and cucumber — and posting up to do school work in their outdoor patio area.”

Healthy brunch spot: “There’s a reason you’ll often wait 45 minutes to eat breakfast or brunch at Sabrina’s Café[5]. The ambiance is bright and welcoming — a laid back elegance — and the food is delicious. Sabrina’s has something for everyone and their seasonal specials are always top-notch, but my go-to vegan meal is the tofu scramble — it never disappoints!”

Healthy lunch spot: “My friend and I often meet up at Osaka[6] for their sushi lunch special. You’ll get two sushi rolls, soup, and salad for about $10. The food and service is always consistent, which is important when it comes to sushi! My go-to rolls are cucumber avocado rolls with brown rice. Vegans can enjoy sushi too!”

Healthy date night spot: “Thai Basil[7] serves Thai food done right! I love coming here with friends who want to try something new. Thai Basil is my go-to when dining with friends with multiple dietary preferences. They easily cater to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. For me, it’s a toss-up between the Panang Curry and the sweet and sour vegetables and tofu.”

Bar: “BYO Tequila anyone? Since 1873, Collingswood has been a dry town. So, naturally, it’s full of BYO restaurants! Tortilla Press[8] is hands down my favorite. You bring the tequila, they handle the mix, and, voila, you’ve got yourself some margaritas! When it comes to the food, my favorite dish is the Artichoke and Black Bean Burrito. It’s a great twist on the standard vegetarian burrito. Don’t forget to try the made-to-order guac, too!”

Smoothie Bar: “What is Collingswood without açaí bowls? Located in the Grant Building, Light Now[9] is a new and trendy smoothie and bowl spot. Smoothies, yogurt bowls, top-able toasts, and of course, bowls fill their menu. My go-to is the Mornin’ Sunshine — a blend of coffee, chocolate almond milk, sunflower butter, and banana — made into a bowl and topped with granola and banana. I like to top with granola and also add vanilla protein powder for an extra boost! Additionally, their avocado toast is anything but basic, complete with a balsamic drizzle and tomato.”

Collingswood Workouts and Gyms

Workout class: “UpCycle[10] offers indoor cycling, barre, and yoga all under one roof! The studio is simple, clean and the instructors are great. Your first class is free when you sign up on their website. The studio is also located in the Grant Building, so you can grab a post-workout smoothie or bowl from Light Now on the way out!”

Running trail: “My favorite nearby park for running is Cooper River Park[11]. With city views and ample parking, it’s popular for those in the area who like to run, bike, and walk the dog. The route is littered with multiple restaurants, tables for picnics, and playgrounds for the little ones along the way. At nearly four miles, it’s the perfect distance for a run. It’s really refreshing in the spring when boats are on the river and beautiful in the fall with the brilliant color changes of the leaves!”

Self-Care in Collingswood

Place you go for self-care: “I like to treat myself to a manicure at Kay’s Nails and Spa[12] on Fridays. Kay’s is clean, reasonably priced, and efficient. The spa is only two blocks from the train station and I never wait more than 20 minutes for an appointment. I usually go with a traditional mani and pedi, and for special occasions, a gel mani. Plus, they offer student discounts and specials, too!”

Collingswood Outdoor Fun

Annual events: “A Saturday in Collingswood isn’t complete without a trip to the outdoor Collingswood Farmers’ Market[13]. Farmers, local vendors, and activities help make the market a vibrant and buzzing destination every Saturday, May through Thanksgiving. After strolling through the tables, you can treat yourself to breakfast and coffee while listening to live music. The last time I went, there was also a petting zoo for the kids!”
