Philly’s Top Plant-Powered Instructors Are Leading a Fitness Retreat at an Animal Sanctuary

This not-for-profit fitness retreat is all about "doing good for you while doing good for others."

Two years ago, Amandah Povilitus — a vegan health coach and Flywheel and Solidcore instructor — had an idea. She wanted to play off the concept of a yoga retreat, but rather than charging hundreds of dollars, she’d keep it not-for-profit and donate the proceeds to an animal sanctuary. In fact, she’d plan to host it at an animal sanctuary — somewhere far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. How amazing does that sound?

Povilitus has hosted two such “Mooove & Gobble” charity retreats thus far, and on July 13 and 14, she’s bringing it back for an even bigger, better weekend of fitness at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in New York. This year, Povilitus is partnering with some of Philly’s top fitness instructors — all of whom follow a plant-powered diet (meaning, they get their energy from eating plants, not animals).

On the team this year is Mark Donohue of Unite Fitness, Leroy Mapp of Unite Fitness and Flywheel, Shannon Brennan of BPM Fitness, and Jon Lyons of City Fitness and RUN215. Plant-powered deejay, DJ Dom McGraw, will also be joining the crew to keep the tunes bumpin’ through the wellness-packed weekend.

The weekend will kick off on Friday, July 13, at 5 p.m. with a check-in, followed by a tour to meet and greet all the animals on the farm. The rest of the evening will include a cornhole tournament (with prizes!), a campfire, s’mores, and an overnight stay in a shared cabin on the property.

On Saturday morning, everyone can dig into a plant-based breakfast and get ready for the first workout of the day, a boot camp led by all five instructors. Smoothies, more animal snuggles, and a vegan lunch will follow the boot camp. Afterwards. you can stay to hang out with the farm fur babies or head back to Philly in your own timing.

“We know that a lot of city folks could use a day (or two!) away from the hustle of the city, and we also know that so many people never get to actually meet farm animals (pigs, goats, cows, chickens, etc.) — and these are ALL rescues,” says Povilitus. “The sanctuary does such good work, and it’s just a great way to raise a lot of money while enjoying a fun escape!”

When it comes to tickets for the retreat, you have two options: There are 25 tickets available for the full weekend, including the overnight stay on Friday, and another 25 tickets available for those who just want to drive up Saturday morning for the 11 a.m. bootcamp and ensuing events. Tickets for Friday and Saturday are $125, while tickets for just Saturday are $75. The best part? Thanks to Rothman Institute, the event sponsor, profits will all go to benefit Woodstock Farm Sanctuary.
