Philly has an insanely wonderful fitness scene, but the truth is, many of us tend to stick to our own neighborhoods — we’ve all got our favorite corner coffee shops, yoga studios, running trails, and more. That’s why we’re asking local fitness pros to give us a tour of their neighborhoods — and to spill all their secrets on the hidden gems they can’t quit.

Fabiana Ferrarini, a certified health coach, trainer, and fitness model, grew up in the Fishtown area “when it was not fancy.” Two months ago, Ferrarini and her family moved back to her old stomping grounds, though things are pretty different from how they looked when she left.

Since moving back, Ferrarini has done plenty of exploring and already has her healthy staples in the neighborhood selected and in use. Fortunately for us, she’s decided to share her faves.

Below, you’ll find what her healthy life looks like in Fishtown — from the best takeout to where she sweats it out to the best kid-friendly spots in the neighborhood. Read on for Ferrarini’s guide to all things health, fitness, and self-care in Fishtown.

The Best Healthy Food and Drinks in Fishtown

Coffee shop: “I usually grab a black coffee with almond milk or a cold-brew latte from La Colombe. I like my coffee plain, with no sugar — I honestly just crave the caffeine.”

Healthy breakfast spot: “Front Street Café is the perfect spot to take your laptop, do some work, and enjoy a delicious meal. I love everything from the simple Front Street Breakfast (eggs, breakfast meat, and potatoes or a salad) to their egg-white omelets. Sometimes, when I want to be a bad girl, I’ll sit for some chicken and waffles.”

Healthy lunch spot: “Suraya is one of my favorite places! From the ambiance to the food, the decoration, the people, and the pastries — it’s all AMAZING. I am obsessed with Shish Taouk (a yogurt-marinated chicken sandwich) and, of course, hummus!”

Healthy date night spot: “WM. Mulherin’s Sons. I am a firm believer that you can always find healthy options on every menu. I always opt for a delicious, well-seasoned half-brick chicken, and I always add a side salad and veggies. Find your greens! Skip the fried options, the ones smothered with sauce, or the cheesy things.”

Bar: “I don’t really drink, but every now and then I love a tasty glass of red wine, and some Jenga at Frankford Hall with my boys!”

Healthy takeout: “I never feel guilty about enjoying some mac and cheese from Snap Kitchen. Everyone loves mac and cheese, which is usually loaded with butter, tons of cheeses, and did I mention more cheese?! The chicken butternut macaroni is loaded with healthier ingredients that will not affect my training: chicken, brown rice macaroni, goat cheese, and butternut squash.”

The Best Workouts in Fishtown

Gym: “I love everything about City Fitness, from the state-of-the-art equipment to the ambiance. I love the industrial look with tons of natural light, which helps keep me motivated. Everyone is extremely friendly and very helpful. And of course, after a crazy leg workout, I love getting a massage on their high-pressure water beds.”

Workout class: “I don’t attend any classes, but my boys have been attending Balance Studios for Muay Thai with Ricardo. They love the workout program and, as a mom, I love having them release their energy while doing something productive. The place is perfect for kids to indulge in some rolling, tossing, and wrestling. Ricardo is a wonderful instructor, and he makes the class super fun while educating the kids.”

The Best Self-Care in Fishtown

Meditation studio: “I was invited to attend a session at Amrita Yoga and Wellness and I loved it! The session was by far one of the best sessions I ever had. I literally fell asleep towards the end — that’s how relaxed I was.”

Self-care: Enhanced Beauty by Design is the place I go for some much needed ME time. It starts from the minute you walk in the door, from slippers, to comfy chairs, coffee, and some relaxing music. I currently visit Enhanced Beauty by Design just for their lash services. Jasmine, the owner, is beyond talented and always educating her clients on how to take care of their lashes. I literally refer to her as my Fairy Lash Mother. I think what attracts me more to Enhanced Beauty by Design, besides their outstanding professional work, is their customer service. It’s impeccable. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you are having a girls day out.”

The Best Outdoor Activities in Fishtown

Park: “Penn Treaty Park is perfect for Enrique and Josiah (my sons) to play soccer, ride their bikes, or just enjoy a walk. The park is open land with tons of greenery and a beautiful view of the Delaware River.”

Annual events: “This year, I am looking forward to the Fishtown RiverCity Festival. I just recently moved to this area of town, and I think it will be a great way to get to know the neighborhood.”
