Attention vegans, vegetarians, and regular folks that happen to enjoy a quality meat- and dairy-free cheesesteak, tomorrow is your day: Tuesday, March 20, is the Great American Meatout — or more fondly referred to as Vegan Cheesesteak Day.
This animal-friendly celebration encourages Americans to venture into the meat-free realm for just one day and to try something new — like a vegan cheesesteak. Right here in Philly, there’s a bunch of spots that will be slinging discounted “steaks” all day long.
On this very special day, cheesesteaks from 12 vegan (and vegan-friendly) hubs — like Wiz Kid, Tattooed Mom, HipCityVeg, and Blackbird Pizzeria — will be offering their meat-free version of the Philly classic at a discounted rate. One dollar-off is the common deal, though some spots are offering up to $4 off or a buy one, get one half off deal. The hope is they’ll get more people to try meat and dairy-free alternatives and help them realize how freakin’ delicious they are — even though the vegan cheesesteak is a bit controversial here in its homeland (amongst the purists, at least).
Tomorrow, I encourage you to gather some friends for lunch or dinner (or both) and venture to one of the local vegan-friendly eateries offering a discounted cheesesteak — which are all listed below and in full here — because, what is life without trying new things?
The Abbaye: $1 off all day
Blackbird Pizzeria: $1 off all day
Frankie’s on Fairview: Vegan cheesesteak with chips for $4 off
Govinda’s Gourmet To Go: $1 off all day
Greyhound Cafe: $2 off all day
HipCityVedge: $1 off all day
P.O.P.E.: $1 off all day
Soy Cafe: Buy one, get one half off
Tattooed Mom: $1 off all day
Wiz Kid: $1 off all day
We can do a meat-free version of our local classic for one day — right, Philly?
