10 Philly Studios Where You Can Take Meditation Classes

We live in a world and a city where it’s GO, GO, GO. But in addition to all the fast walkers, talkers, and drivers, we also live in a time where mental stimulation is constant. From Instagram-induced FOMO to Snapchat push notifications, there’s hardly ever any peace and quiet in our lives. Unless you specifically seek it out, that is.

While it hardly needs an introduction, meditation is a practice that can help us stay calm and centered in the midst of these crazy lives that we all lead. Check out this list of ten local studios that offer at least one meditation classes per week to help give yourself a mental break, while learning tactics to help manage situations with peace. Whether you’re a meditation pro or a total newbie to the meditational world, you’ll find a class here for you.

Amrita Yoga and Wellness

Where: 1204 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown
Classes offered: Amrita not only offers a weekly meditation session, but the zen time will only run you $5 to boot. Each 30-minute session will kick off with some light instruction to guide you into the meditation and, from there, you will learn a variety of mindfulness and meditation traditions. Plus, it will help you beat the Sunday Scaries, taking place at 8:15 p.m. on Sunday evenings.

Mama’s Wellness Joint

Where: 1100 Pine Street, Washington Square West
Classes offered: Mama’s Kundalini class is perfect if you’re looking for some movement with your meditation. Kundalini literally means energy, which you’ll be moving throughout your body with meditations and movements, inspired by breath. No yoga or meditation experience is necessary to take this Wednesday evening class. They also currently have a meditation workshop on the books for February so keep, your eyes peeled for similar workshops.

Mindful Elephant Yoga Studio

Where: 2000 Spring Garden Street, Fairmout
Classes offered: If the name of this yoga studio didn’t give it away, you better believe they offer a ton of meditation classes. Mindful Elephant’s schedule offers four meditation-based classes at multiple times throughout the week: Mindful Flow and Meditation is a moderately-paced class, focusing on meditation-in-motion by connecting breath and movement. Kripalu Mindful Flow is an introspective class that begins with a focus of being present followed by a flow geared toward balancing your mind, body, and spirit. Hatha and Meditation will lead you through a series of foundational postures, with a focus on alignment, followed by a meditation. Mindful Meditation is more of your standard meditation class — no mat is needed and it’s a $5 (cash) drop-in — though instead of trying to find stillness in your mind, this class aims to help you find ways of dealing with your thoughts and emotions in a way that leads to more peace and calm (yes, please!).

Palo Santo Wellness Boutique

Where: 1707 East Passyunk Avenue, Passyunk
Classes offered: Tuesdays are for transcending at Palo Santo — every Tuesday evening, the studio hosts a donation-based meditation and mantra session. Expect a 30-minute guided meditation session, focusing on breath-work, and mantra chanting.

Philly Power Yoga and Thrive Pilates

Where: 2016 Walnut Street, Rittenhouse
Classes offered: Wednesdays evenings at Philly Power Yoga are for meditation, or “Mind Melting” as they like to call it. MindMelt Meditation sessions are an introductory-style meditation class intended to help you cultivate and manifest your intentions all week long.

Raja Yoga and Meditation Center

Where: 724 South 20th Street, Graduate Hospital
Classes offered: In addition to the many meditation retreats gracing Raja’s calendar and the meditation teacher trainings, their schedule features a weekly Hatha yoga class with a seated meditation on Saturday mornings. You can expect the session to be a shortened Hatha practice leaving ample room for a 20-minute meditation, followed by a short discussion after.

Sanctuary Yoga and Mindfulness

Where: 1233 Locust Street, Midtown Village
Classes offered: Sanctuary Yoga’s schedule features “Mindfulness Meditation,” a 30-minute guided meditation utilizing yogic and mindfulness techniques, every day of the week (and sometimes twice a day!). This session is open to everyone whether you’re a meditation pro or just someone looking for a few peaceful moments.

Vitality Meditation

Where: 1856 Frankford Avenue, Fishtown
Classes offered: As we told you in early December, this studio is new to the scene here in Philly. Needless to say, Vitality’s schedule is chock full of different meditation classes — ranging from their intro classes where you can literally ask questions (kinda what all newbies yearn for, right?) to classes focused on breath, or an open heart, or even mindfulness. Plus, for all of the essential oil-junkies out there, they have a meditation class with essential oils themed weekly for different types of healing (talk about helpful take-home knowledge!).

Yoga and Movement Sanctuary

Where: 2623 Girard Avenue, Brewerytown
Classes offered: Thrice weekly, the Sanctuary hosts a 30-minute breathing and meditation class. The session will teach you breathing and meditation techniques that will aid in mental clarity, stress reduction, and mental strength. This class is free for all Sanctuary members, and a $5 donation is suggested for non-members.

Yoga Esoterica

Where: 1835 South Broad Street, South Philly
Classes offered: This wellness hub, in addition to offering yoga, reiki and integrative health coaching, offers biweekly meditation sessions. Both sessions take place at 12:15 p.m., making them a great midday break from the office buzz and stress, or life in general. In 30 minutes, you’ll have reset your mind and body, prepping it for the rest of the day, week or month ahead.
