Name: Amy Reed

Role: Founder of Slay Sarcoma Research Initiative Inc., a non-profit organization that raises awareness and research funds for Leiomyosarcoma; victim of morcellation.

Who or what motivates you to be healthy?
My biggest motivator to be healthy is my family. I have a very supportive husband, six amazing children and a large, caring network of extended family who push me to be the best I can be.

Describe a health or fitness-related turning point in your life.
Although I’ve always tried to live a healthy lifestyle, my definition of health changed when I was diagnosed with uterine Leiomyosarcoma (an aggressive soft tissue cancer) in October 2013.

What policy would you institute to make Greater Philadelphia a healthier region?
I, and several patients who were harmed by medical devices, would like the Greater Philadelphia region to suggest, and even enact its own Medical Device Guardians Act (see H.R. 5404) which would prevent future patients from being harmed by medical devices without the FDA and other regulatory bodies being informed.

What’s the most important part of your health or fitness regimen?
The most important part of my health regimen is my diet. I am very selective of what I eat and as the main meal provider in the house, this extends to my family. There is a lot of unintentional pollution of our bodies through what we eat and this can hinder our being as healthy as possible.

What is your number one piece of health related-advice or encouragement?
You are number one! No one is able to take as good care of yourself as you are. Advocate for yourself, ask questions and don’t stop until you get the answers you need. Any good health care provider will recognize a patient interested in their health!
