10 Coolest Fitness and Foodie Events in Philly This Month: April 2015
This month was a hard one to pare down to just 10 top events because there’s so much going on to keep us busy. From outdoor yoga to a runners’ potluck to a bike movie night, here’s what to add to your to-do list in April.
1. Outdoor Yoga at Race Street Pier and Schuylkill Banks
When: Race Street Pier kicks off on Saturday, April 11th; Schuykill Banks on Saturday, April 18th.
Where: Race Street Pier, 121 North Columbus Boulevard, Delaware Riverfront, and Schuylkill Banks, 25th and Locust.
Free outdoor yoga returns! Two of Philly’s most popular warm-weather events are back this month with ample opportunities to get your free yoga on through the spring and early fall. The links above have the full schedules.
2. Philly Farm and Food Fest
When: Sunday, April 12th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center.
This annual event, hosted by Fair Food Philly and the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture, is a food lover’s dream, with over 150 local farms and businesses setting up shop for the day, basically creating the dreamiest farmers’ market imaginable. There’s also a cooking demo stage, where you can soak up some serious food knowledge, how-to workshops all day long, and a Book Nook where you can meet local cookbook authors. Tickets are $20.
3. Springtime on the Schuylkill Fun Run and Potluck
When: Saturday, April 4th at 9 a.m.
Where: Meet at Lloyd Hall, 1 Boathouse Row, Fairmount.
Celebrate the first weekend of car-free running on West River Drive with a free fun run and runners’ potluck picnic to follow. You’ll start at the Art Museum steps then head out for an all-levels, all-paces run. The run ends with a picnic at the Azalea Garden behind the Art Museum. Food and drinks are BYO.
4. Students Run Philly Style Power Yoga Fundraiser
When: Saturday, April 4th from 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Philly Power Yoga, 2016 Walnut Street, Rittenhouse.
This 60-minute power yoga class will get you amped on a Saturday night with a fun, upbeat playlist and wine and eats to follow. It’s a $20 suggested donation; the event benefits Students Run Philly Style.
5. Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-Mile Run
When: Sunday, April 19th at 8:30 a.m.
Where: Valley Forge National Historical Park, 1400 North Outer Line Drive, King of Prussia.
This popular five-mile run returns for its 10th year. The USATF-certified course winds over rolling hills and past historic landmarks inside the park. The race fetches more than 1,200 runners from six states. There’s also a three-mile fun run/walk. It’s $40 for the run and $25 for the walk.
6. Waynederlust Yoga Festival
When: Saturday, April 25th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Rain date: April 26th)
Where: Wilson Farm Park, 500 Lee Road, Wayne.
Lululemon’s Wayne store is celebrating its five-year anniversary with a day of free fitness at Wilson Park. The schedule: mat Pilates at 11:15 a.m.; boot camp at 12:30 p.m.; barre at 2; cardio circuit at 3; and yoga at 4. Local vendors,including the Juice Philly, HubBub Coffee and more, will also be on hand hawking samples.
7. “Discover Healthy Mediterranean Cuisine” Cooking Class
When: Sunday, April 12th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: The Nourishing Well, 505 West Darby Road, Havertown.
This demo-style class — instructor Marilyn Moser-Waxman cooks while you watch, take notes, sip tea and eat samples — will teach you about nutrient-packed dishes from the Mediterranean. You learn why the Mediterranean diet is considered so healthy and glean recipes starring fresh ingredients to make for yourself at home. It’s $60 to participate.
8. Rock ‘N Roll Vinyasa for LLS
When: Sunday, April 12th from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Where: Doubletree Hotel, 301 West Dekalb Pike, King of Prussia.
Stillpoint Yoga is hosting a fun fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: a 90-minute Vinyasa class set to classic rock hits. After class, there will be food, drinks and raffles for goods and services at local businesses. The event is pay-what-you-wish, with funds going to LLS of Eastern PA.
Run215 is teaming up with Sly Fox Brewing Company for the last leg of the launch tour for Sly Fox’s Schuylkill River Trail Ale. The event doubles as an opportunity to do your part on Earth Day. Here’s how it will work: At 4, you’ll meet at Paine’s Park for a trash clean-up along the Schuylkill Banks. Then, at 6, you’ll hightail it over to World Cafe Live for the official launch party for the SRT Ale. Total running distance will be about three miles, and it’s open to all levels and abilities.
10. Bike Movie Night
When: Friday, April 10th from 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Where: The Glass Factory, 1517 North Bailey Street, Brewerytown.
CineSPEAK and SPOKE magazine are teaming up for a bicycling-themed movie night and art exhibition. The evening starts with a pop-up photography show and party, featuring music and beer from 6:30 to 8. Then the films get underway, with showings of Jitensha and Wadjda, both bike-related movies. It’s $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
