10 Coolest Fitness and Foodie Events in Philly This Month: January 2015

Got your calendar ready? You’re going to need it. This month’s fitness and foodie calendar is jam-packed with activities, from a fitness scavenger hunt to a seven-mile trail run to a kale-crazy cooking class and lots more.

1. The Great Philly “Tour De Core” Fit Challenge
What: CoreFitness is hosting a killer fitness scavenger hunt this month. You’ll meet at the top of the Art Museum steps and be split into two teams. From there, you’ll be given a clue that will send you off on a wild goose chase through the city, stopping at points along the way for some quick fitness challenges. The course will take groups between 50 and 90 minutes to complete. It starts and ends at the Art Museum steps and costs $20 to participate.
When: Saturday, January 24th at 9 a.m.
Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Fairmount.

2. “50 Shades of Kale and Other Winter Greens” Cooking Workshop
What: The name of the session pretty much says it all, don’t you think? You’ll learn how to cook delicious, healthy meals with the best greens available during winter months in our area. The class includes hands-on instruction, a copy of all recipes, food, beverages and complimentary wine. It’s $59 a person.
When: Tuesday, January 20th from 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: The Kitchen Workshop, Paoli Depot Shops, 21 Plank Avenue, suite 204, Paoli.

3. Chilly Cheeks 7-Mile Trail Run
What: A bum-freezingly cold (Get it?) trail race with hills, obstacles and breakfast at the end. Runners get a long-sleeve tech shirt, the aforementioned breakfast, and a post-race party with a live band and plenty of time/space to hang out with friends and spectators. It’s $34 if you register by January 7th (race shirt is guaranteed), $39 after (race shirt until supplies last).
When: Sunday, January 25th at 11 a.m.
Where: Reading Liederkranz German Singing & Sports Club, 140 Spook Lane, Reading.

4. Survivor Spin
What: This new monthly indoor cycling class is intended to inspire and motivate those who have battled the ups and downs of cancer. It’s taught by Living Beyond Breast Cancer volunteer and breast cancer survivor Megan Do Nascimento. The class is free, but due to high demand, preregistration is encouraged.
When: Sunday, January 18th from 1 to 1:45 p.m.
Where: The Wall Cycling Studio, 100 Levering Street, Manayunk.

5. The Yogi’s Table
What: A yoga class turned cooking lesson. You’ll take an hourlong yoga class, then learn the ins-and-outs of healthy, chef-quality cooking with a demo and tasting. Each monthly session can accommodate only a handful of participants, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity for individual attention both in class and in the kitchen. The events are hosted by Full and Happy; it’s $50 a person.
When: Thursday, January 8th at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Fairmount. Once you register, you’ll be sent the exact address.

6. Bryn Mawr Running Company Resolution Run
What: Kick off a great year of running with this choose-your-own-adventure-style race. Runners will have three distances to choose from: a one-mile, three-mile or five-mile course. After the run, you’ll head back to the shop, where runners will get a $10 gift card to use at BMRC, light breakfast, goodie bags, door prizes and 25 percent off all purchases made that morning. It’s $10 to participate.
When: Saturday, January 10th at 8 a.m.
Where: Bryn Mawr Running Company, 828 West Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr.

7. Abs Blast for Yogis
What: A core-focused class that’ll have your midsection trembling. This two-hour workshop features a series of poses that encourage core engagement and instruction for using core strength to balance on your hands or head. All levels are welcome. It’s $25 in advance or $35 at the door.
When: Sunday, January 25th from noon to 2 p.m.
Where: Stillpoint Yoga Studio, 217 West Church Road, King of Prussia.

8. River to River Beer Running Tour
What: This five-mile guided group run includes stops along the way to learn about the city and history. You’ll run river to river (duh) leaving from Philadelphia Runner’s Center City store and ending at McGillin’s Olde Ale House. Runners will get one free beer at McGillin’s. It’s $35 to participate.
When: Sunday, January 18th at 1 p.m.
Where: Meet at 1601 Sansom Street, Center City.

9. Healing Stocks and Soups Workshop
What: Organic/gluten-free/plant-based cafe P.S. and Co. returns in the new year with a slew of fresh cooking workshops. The first in a series of savory sessions is on stocks and soups—namely, how to make delicious, nutritious ones for yourself at home. The workshop is presented in demonstration format with opportunities for hands-on participation and plenty of taste-testing. It’s $45 to join in
When: Saturday, January 10th from 3 to 5 p.m.
Where: 1706 Locust Street, Rittenhouse.

10. ODDyssey Half Marathon Early Registration Party
What: The ODDyssey Half Marathon will be setting up shop at Philadelphia Runner for an early-registration party. You’ll get $5 off registration for the June 14th half marathon, and have the opportunity to sip beer with the race director and other ODDyssey runners.
When: Monday, January 5th from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: 1601 Sansom Street, Center City.
