Over 600 women turned out for Philadelphia magazine’s third annual Be Well Philly Boot Camp: An Inspirational Health and Wellness Event for Women, sponsored by Independence Blue Cross. The day was chock full of exercise, education, healthy food, and inspiration—and we have the fun video recap from the sold-out fit fest right here. In addition to scoring one-on-one time with local wellness experts, watching nutritious chef demos, and shopping in the health and beauty marketplace, attendees tried all kinds of workouts and mini-workouts, both inside the studios and out in the sun, from yoga and dance classes to cross-training runs and body-sculpting sessions.

While the morning was dedicated to moving, the afternoon was all about being moved: Empower Hour, which was new to the itinerary this year, featured keynote speaker and “Back on My Feet” founder Anne Mahlum. (Her Philly-based non-profit received a portion of the proceeds from this year’s Boot Camp.) Kim Eberbach, vice president of wellness and community health at Independence Blue Cross, introduced Mahlum to the audience by emphasizing the importance of initiatives like Be Well Philly Boot Camp that help empower people to take control of their own health. “It’s the kind of thing we should be doing more of in the region,” said Eberbach. “I think the partnership and collaboration just enhances what we’re all trying to do for Philadelphia.”

Then Mahlum shared her story—an inspirational one about the running club and outreach program she launched seven years ago for homeless Philadelphians. Since then, “Back on My Feet” has improved the confidence—and, summarily, the lives—of countless individuals across the country. The idea is something we can all relate to, regardless of socioeconomic status: In addition to the obvious health and strength benefits, a regular exercise routine like jogging can also do wonders for self-sufficiency and self-image. In other words, never underestimate your own power.
