Warning: This Online Calculator Will Make You Feel Like a Bad Son or Daughter

Note to self: Call Mom tonight.

Ever feel guilty that you don’t see your parents more often? I know, I know—life gets in the way. All those after-work happy hours, weekend day-trips to the Shore, lazy Sunday brunches with friends … and before you know it, you can’t even remember the last time you stopped by the ol’ homestead to pay mom and dad a visit.

An online calculator called See Your Folks that’s making the rounds this week will crunch the data to figure out how many times you’ll see your parents before they die, based on how often you see them now. It asks where your parents live, how many times you see them a year, and how old both your mom and dad are. Then, using life expectancy data from the World Health Organization, it comes up with a figure that will either make you feel like a total jerk or incredibly sad. Uplifting!

Actually, the creators write on the site that they wanted to post this thing because “we believe that increasing awareness of death can help us to make the most of our lives. The right kind of reminders can help us to focus on what matters, and perhaps make us better people.” Oh fine. I guess that’ll do.

Find out how many more times you’ll see your parents here. Then go call your mom, will ya?
