HipCityVeg Now Offers Calorie Counts

Ever wonder what that Groothie actually costs you, calorie-wise? Now you can find out.

This, ironically enough, was my lunch yesterday. There was a curry tofu wrap inside.

This has literally been months in the making, people. I first emailed HipCityVeg owner Nicole Marquis back in March when I got wind of the fact that she was in the process of sleuthing out the calorie counts for the food on her cafe’s menu. Today, at long last, those calorie counts arrived in my inbox.

Before I proceed, HipCity regulars will notice that not every item on the menu is included here, and there’s no word yet if all items will be included eventually. For now, the restaurant’s spokesgal Dalia Gonzalez told me, “Nicole did not include ‘fried’ items because, well … they’re fried.” So, take that as you will.

Here’s what we do have nutrition data for:

GROOTHIE
Green smoothie with organic apples, organic leafy greens, bananas, and seasonal fruit.
Nutrition facts: 210 calories, 1 fat gram, 0 grams saturated fat, 0 milligrams cholesterol, 20 milligrams sodium, 53 grams carbs, 7 grams fiber, 33 grams sugar, 3 grams protein.
Total fruits/veggies servings: 2 cups.

SPINACH SALAD
Spinach, croutons, radish, tomato, tempeh, and horseradish dressing, served on the side.
Nutrition facts: 260 calories, 13 fat grams, 1 gram saturated fat, 0 milligrams cholesterol, 1,160 milligrams sodium, 26 grams carbs, 8 grams fiber, 6 grams sugar, 13 grams protein,
Total fruits/veggies servings: 2.25 cups.
Note: The data for the horseradish dressing is not included in the analysis. Add 60 calories, 6 fat grams and 115 milligrams sodium for each tablespoon you eat.

ARUGULA TACO SALAD
Black beans, grilled corn, pico de gallo, tortilla strips, avocado and cilantro dressing.
Nutrition facts: 200 calories, 9 fat grams, 1.5 grams saturated fat, 0 milligrams cholesterol, 470 milligrams sodium, 27 grams carbs, 10 grams fiber, 5 grams sugar, 8 grams protein.

LIGHT UDON NOODLE SALAD
Sprouts, carrots, cabbage, daikon, peanuts, and spicy glazed chick’n, tossed with one ounce of dressing.
Nutrition facts:
410 calories, 20 fat grams, 1.5 grams saturated fat, 0 milligrams cholesterol, 490 milligrams sodium, 36 grams carbs, 4 grams fiber, 6 grams sugar, 23 grams protein.
