Nick & Sophia
Wedding Date: October 13, 2012 in Fairmount Park Horticulture Center
How They Met: Nick and Sophia were first introduced in the fall of 2005 by a mutual friend who had met Nick earlier in the year and was determined to find "someone to date this nice midwestern boy!" After the brief introduction, they met up again a few weeks later at a campus bar and exchanged phone numbers, planning to meet later in the week at a "Wing Bowl" tryout. Nick never showed up, but Sophia still competed brilliantly. He sent her a bouquet of cookies to apologize, and the rest is history.
The Proposal: On the weekend of Sophia's birthday, they were in Washington, DC for the weekend because she was attending a medical conference on Saturday afternoon. That Sunday, they wanted to spend some time at the Cherry Blossom Festival before heading home. As they walked along the water by the Tidal Basin, Nick suggested they stop and ask someone nearby to take a picture of them by the water. After they posed for the picture, Nick smiled a particularly goofy smile and asked the guy to take another picture. He unzipped his coat, pulled out a little black box, and got down on one knee. Grinning from ear to ear, he said, "Happy birthday, Soph!" Sophia couldn't believe what was happening! She paused for a second, then said, "Well...don't you want to ask me something?" They laughed, Nick finally popped the question, and the generous stranger snapped picture after picture to capture the entire thing.
Suddenly, a woman from up on the hill came running toward them. She stopped in front of them and said, "I'm so sorry to interrupt you like this, but I just wanted to say congratulations! We're here with the Weather Channel doing a live report on the Cherry Blossom Festival and we'd love to interview you on the air in a few minutes as part of our segment!" During the following 5 minutes, Sophia & Nick called their parents & grandparents and told them to turn on the Weather Channel. A few minutes later, their families learned on national television that Sophia and Nick were engaged!
