How They Met: Eric and I met 3 years ago at the hospital where we work. He was a surgical resident and I was the emergency department nurse taking care of one of his patients. He had just moved to Philadelphia from St. Louis and I had offered to show him around the city. We exchanged numbers and it took him a week to call me. We have been inseparable ever since our first date!
The Proposal: Eric is in his first year of a vascular surgery fellowship. He had been working all of the time and took off a weekend to take me to New York City for an early 3 year anniversary dinner. We got to NY checked into the hotel and I was eager to exchange gifts. Every year I add pages to the scrap book I started after our first year, and I always get excited to show him the pages as well as my gift. He had ordered me a necklace online that was wrapped in a box similar to a ring box. I was grateful for my gift but upset that he did not take the time to write or buy a card. We continued our day with a walk in Battery park, a showing of Evita, and dinner at the beautiful and romantic River Cafe in Brooklyn. The dinner was romantic. You could smell the fresh flowers that filled the room, and the dining area was crowded but intimate. The couple across from us actually got engaged during dinner. He realized I was somewhat upset and asked me what was wrong. I told him that I was ready to move forward and I thought we would have gotten engaged by now. I was pressuring him for answers as to planning our future. After dinner he wanted to walk around the garden. He took me to a private spot where he said since I didn't get you a card I will tell you what I would have written in the card. He started a speech, with you have been patient....thats all I heard as i saw him fumbiling in his pocket for what I knew was in there. His voice was distant as I was fixated on watching him as he got down on one knee and proposed! He had been planning this for months. It was the best moment ever! On the cab ride back to the room and after yelling at him for makingme wait until midnight, I had to ask him if I let him put the ring on or if I grabbed it and put it on myself! I was so full of excitement I couldn't remember.
