I had the honor and great pleasure of having Ken Ulansey's qunitet play at my wedding in 1984. I had given Ken very loose guidelines about what I wanted to hear, but it was limited strictly to jazz, especially from the 60s-70s and specifically lots of Miles and Coltrane. His band blew me away. The improvisational skills were top notch, my guests (those who were straight enough to notice the music) were asking me for months to give them the name and number of the band. One marriage later, I still especially remember two numbers that they played with complete fidelity to the melody and yet in their own distinctive way: My One and Only Love and Coltrane's Invitation. Spectacular. For a while I sat alone in a folding chair in front of the band smoking a cigar listening, thinking, "these cats are playing for me!"
