FRIDAY, MAY 5

Russell Howard @ TLA
A one-off comedy show by the British standup best known for his Good News TV show/video series.

Dwight Yoakam @ Keswick Theatre
A genuine country music star comes Glenside. Did you know he did a ramblin’ cover of “Mama Tried?” Also: Did you know he dated Sharon Stone? Just a weird little fun fact.

Fronteras: A Door in the Desert @ FringeArts
Acrobatics and storytelling by Almanac Dance Circus Theatre collaborating with Mexican choreographer/theater artist Emmanuel Becerra.

Kensington Blues @ Savery Gallery
Photo show. Between 2008 and 2014, photographer Jeffrey Stockbridge captured a side of Philly rarely seen, rarely talked about anywhere else. The photos and interviews on his Kensington Blues site tell stories of survival, addiction, sex work and everyday struggles along Kensington Avenue. This exhibition doubles as the launch of his new book of photos from the project. Reception Friday, May 5, 5-9 p.m.

Greg Behrendt @ Helium
Yeah he wrote He’s Just Not That Into You, but he’s really a standup comedian. Through May 7.

Bishop Briggs @ Union Transfer
The Scotland-born/Hong Kong-raised/Hollywood-based British folk-pop star with the gin-smooth vocal style is kind of a sensation these days.

Pete Correale @ Punchline Philly
The Long Island-born standup first turned heads with his 2010 special, The Things We Do for Love. If you like this, you like him. Through May 6.

Prestige Tattoo and Music Festival @ Fillmore
Two days of ink and music. Saturday = Supersuckers. Sunday = Cro-Mags. May 5 and 6.

Koresh Dance Company @ Suzanne Roberts Theatre
Roni Koresh revives his “Sense of Human” show with live music accompaniment Thursday, Friday and Saturday, each with a happy hour attached. Cap it off on Sunday with Koresh Kouture: a High Fashion Performance & Gala which includes a cocktail hour and reception. Through May 7.

Ab-Soul: The YMF Tour @ The Trocadero
Kendrick Lamar’s old pal is touring behind of last year’s Do What Thou Wilt. A California rapper with a sense for the trippy and the mysterious — note the Aleister Crowley reference — he recently made waves with a tantalizing tweet.

The Besnard Lakes @ Johnny Brenda’s
Pretty, moody, psychedelic indie pop from Canada. They’ve got a skill for glorious melodies that lift and confuse the soul.

This World Is Not For Me @ Colorspace Labs
Visual Art. Philly screenprinter and graphic designer Jim Anderson specializes in color-saturated, inventively creepy posters and wheatpastes. Check some of his art in yesterday’s First Friday roundup. Reception Friday, May 5, 5-9 p.m.

Start Making Sense @ World Café Live
We’re in a golden age of tribute acts. These guys do the Talking Heads with remarkable attention to musical detail.

Dysrhythmia @ Kung Fu Necktie
Philly’s most complicated instrumental prog metal band. If you’ve never heard them before, start with this track and wear a neckbrace.

Tycho @ Electric Factory
Composer/producer Scott Hansen mixes warbly synths with hard beats to create his oddly artsy and often invigorating ambient dance music. His latest is called Epoch and it’s what the robots will use to psych themselves up before the big war.

Faces of Philadelphia (Musicians) @ Brewerytown Beats
Visual art. Working with watercolor on Plexiglas, painter Anna Mraz plays with light and color in her portraits of Philly musicians. I interviewed Mraz for yesterday’s First Friday roundup. Reception Friday, May 5, 6-10 p.m.

SATURDAY, MAY 6

Rostam @ Union Transfer
The Vampire Weekend multi-instrumentalist and producer is now a solo artist doing electronic pop that’s generally earnest, often ethereal and occasionally eerie.

Eastern State Penitentiary Market @ Eastern State Penitentiary
This giant flea market around the old prison is “not affiliated” with the prison itself. We’ve got you surrounded! With old gravy boats and comic books on folding tables!

Mastodon/Opeth/Gojira/Eagles of Death Metal @ Electric Factory
A beast of a show. These bands are loud, dramatic, majestic and loud.

South Street Spring Festival @ South Street/Headhouse Square
Food, activities and music. Performances by iLLECTIVE, Aviance, The Jawn, The Quixote Project Adam Travis and more. The main event may well be the Philly Taco Challenge, in which contestants compete to see who can be the first to finish a slice of Lorenzo’s pizza wrapped around a Jim’s cheesesteak.

Andre Hommen @ Underground Arts
The hard-touring, German-born house DJ.

Taxidermy Takeover @ Wagner Free Institute
Taxidermy/diaphonization experts Divya Anantharaman, Katie Innamorato, and Mark Breen-Klein will discuss their dark arts, part of Atlas Obscura’s Obscura Day “celebration of exploration and discovery.”

Let There Be Lips @ TLA
This Rocky Horror Picture Show celebration/costume party starts with a 9 p.m. “flash dance” (I guess we don’t say “flash mob” in Philly anymore) performance of the Time Warp in the middle of South Street. Then go inside for a dance party hosted by DJ Robert Drake and a screening of the movie.

Philadelphia Kite Festival @ Penn Treaty Park
A free event featuring kites, community and food trucks. Includes a performance by The South Jersey Kite Flyers who have somehow won awards for their prowess in the kiting arts. I was going to embed a kite video but you know what? They’re all pretty lame. When it comes to kites, you gotta be there.

Financial Guru Gregg Gethard @ Good Good Comedy Theatre
Looks like my old pal The Greggulator’s got a hit on his hands playing the slick author of Cash Dad Trash Dad. Last week’s performance sold out, so Good Good added an encore show. (P.S. Stick around for UCB’s “live-coding comedy show” Let’s Make A Website which sounds awesome, too.)

Raffi @ Keswick Theatre
Two shows celebrating “40 Years of Singable Songs” by the beloved maker of music for children and, no lie, the author of Lightweb Darkweb: Three Reasons To Reform Social Media Be4 It Re-Forms Us.

Beanie Sigel @ Voltage
The Rasputin of Rap plays a hometown show. Here’s his latest, a team-up with Dave East. NSFW for language. This is a new era for Beans; he’s looking leaner and rapping wiser, and his post lung surgery voice has a scratchy, Brando-esque thing going on that can’t help but up the gravitas of what he’s saying.

Ryan Adams @ Tower Theater
Adams is touring behind his 16th solo record, Prisoner. He played “Outbound Train” on Colbert recently and it was a high-energy performance by the semi-countryish rocker. Reminds me of Springsteen, Mellencamp and all the titans of restless Americana.

SUNDAY, MAY 7

Bad Rabbits @ Voltage Lounge
Super-caffeinated, feel-great R&B and rock from Boston. With Communion and Ill Doots.

Bike the Broad Street Run @ Broad Street
It’s waaay to late for you to run the Broad Street Run this year, but maybe you wanna bike it? Sort of? This night ride starts at Broad and West Somerville and ends at the Navy Yard. Homeland Security said it was okay.

Eddie Jobson & Marc Bonilla @ World Café Live
These prog rock veterans (of the bands UK and Keith Emerson Band) play the music of UK, King Crimson and Emerson Lake and Palmer. On how many levels will you enjoy this?

The Damned @ TLA
Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible and The Damned are basically British punk royalty, having inspired many of the great and terrible punk bands you love today.

Air Sex Championships @ Kung Fu Necktie
Get judged by your ability to hump the air. In fact, I’m judging you right now.

Laughwell with Dr. Katz @ Punchline Philly
Jonathan Katz revives his therapist character from his cult-classic squiggle-vision Comedy Central show, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. This show benefits ArtWell. I know I already posted a Dr. Katz video this week, but what the hell:
