The Tommy Up/Yachtsman saga continues: On Friday morning, S&L Real Estate’s Lance Bachmann — Up’s landlord at 1444 Frankford Avenue — reached out to Foobooz to notify us that Up will not, in fact, reopen his tiki bar on Saturday, like he said he would. He won’t reopen next week, either.
That’s because Up’s company, Frankford Restaurant Holdings, Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania’s United States Bankruptcy Court on Thursday. Read more »
There are a lot of ways to battle single degree lows. Burrow under your heaviest comforter and wait for spring. Enjoy a Hot Toddy or whiskey shots. But there’s another way to battle the cold that we’re particularly fond of, DENIAL.
Here are six drinks being poured around town that will take you back (or forward) to summer.

Every Wednesday, Tommy Up’s The Yachtsman brings in free Pizza Brain pizza after 9 p.m. Combine that with a $3 Kona Lager and you’re looking at a very thrifty Wednesday evening.
Pizza is free while supplies last.

Adam Erace weighs in on the cocktails at the Yachtsman and happily reports, the tiki drinks are fun and good. But most importantly, fun.
Making cocktails has been elevated to such high art, at times they can elicit a why-so-serious backlash, but with Yachtsman’s menu of high-octane punches, sneaky frappes and colorful rum coolers, Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal have managed to weave together drinks that feel joyful as well as thoughtful. Like the Bird of Paradise, a frothy cross between a Clover Club and a Ramos gin fizz with a subtle orange blossom perfume, or the grass-green Missionary’s Downfall, a frosty, refreshing rum, peach-and-pineapple situation whose color comes from a jungle of blended-in fresh mint. The velvety Tree Frog, a Don Q banana daiquiri mix with an undercurrent of galangal, allspice and star anise, is flat-out delicious; I want to make it a part of my daily breakfast routine.
Also revealed in Erace’s review, his high school AIM username.

The Illuminati have declared today to be National Pina Colada Day (at least that’s who we assume control the designation of ridiculous things like National Pina Colada Day) and Emmanuelle is offering a pina colada and some tiki drinks that will be on the menu at Tommy Up’s upcoming tiki bar, the Yachtsman.
Emmanuelle opens at 8 p.m. and the pina colada and other tiki drinks are $8 while they last.

Tommy Up’s tiki bar continues to inch closer to opening. The Fishtown bar is getting a seafaring paint job befitting a bar named the Yachtsman.
When I interviewed Tommy Up recently for the back page of Philadelphia magazine’s April edition, he told me that his Fishtown tiki bar The Yachtsman would open around April 15th. Well last week came and went without any sign of The Yachtsman, and now we know why: the project has run out of money. Read more »
Tommy Up is expanding his PYT joint to New York and D.C., and this month debuts a Fishtown tiki bar. The 42-year-old talks Jay Z, Japanese-mafia tattoos, and the best beef in Philadelphia. (Shocker: It’s not his.)
