July Talk @ Boot & Saddle | Wednesday, February 15
Peter Dreimanis’ scratchy, deep voice blends with Leah Fay’s light and sweeter tones atop driving guitar riffs and a thudding-but-danceable rhythm section on this Toronto-based band’s records, including last year’s Touch. They’ve opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Weezer and Alabama Shakes.

Dan Soder Taping his Comedy Central Special at the Trocadero

dan-soder-comedy-central-trocadero

At 32, comedian Dan Soder is no longer the rookie on the comedy circuit. Nor is he quite the senior comic with bragging rights to his own sitcom or an appearance on Jerry Seinfeld’s cliquey Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. But things are breaking his way, and he is moving steadily up the comedy ladder. Yes, he played “dumpster guy” with no lines in Amy Schumer’s summer comedy, Trainwreck, but hey, he got to make out with Schumer, and that Judd Apatow movie was definitely the party to be at with A-list comedians, actors and athletes piled into every scene.

Soder is a Queens-based blunt talking regular guy — a self-described “Beta male smartass. I’m the least dude-bro-guy you could ever meet” — who’s taping his Comedy Central hour-long special at the Trocadero on December 3rd. The special is expected to run in early 2016. He also scored a regular radio gig this July when Comedy Central launched its first live weekly show on SiriusXM. Soder co-hosts the two-hour, twice-a-week radio show, The Bonfire, with Philadelphia comedian Big Jay Oakerson. He is a regular on Inside Amy Schumer and The Half Hours, as well as MTV’s Guy Code.

Way back in 2013, a band from Los Angeles called Caught a Ghost played an opening slot on a Thursday night at popular Fishtown bar-restaurant-nightclub Johnny Brenda’s, one of Foobooz’s Best Bars of 2015. The show didn’t get any press, and we couldn’t find a single video from the night other than a quick soundcheck clip of the headliner. But the gig was pivotal in landing Johnny Brenda’s some significant screen time in Creed, the new Rocky movie that opens nationwide on November 25th. Read more »

Gone are the days when Philly’s satirical punk rock band The Dead Milkmen tour around in a kooky converted ambulance. It’s 30-plus years down the road since the band’s inception in the early 1980s. “Now our touring involves buses and planes,” says drummer Dean “Clean” Sabatino. He clarifies that it was, in fact, a medical transport van that the guys bought secondhand and never bothered to remove the sign. “We passed it on to another band, so it still lives on.”

Win Tickets to See Peaches This Weekend at the Trocadero [CONTEST CLOSED]

UPDATE [10/21/2015, 12:22 pm]: We’ve already given away all the tickets. If you’re interested in checking out Peaches at the Trocadero, more information on the show and ticket links can be found here.

peachesORIGINAL: Canadian electro raunch rocker Peaches in coming to the Troc this weekend on a tour to support her latest LP. Rub is Peaches’ sixth studio album, and was supposedly created in her garage in Los Angeles with producer Vice Cooler. Pitchfork says the album “builds upon the body of work she’s accumulated in the past 15 years,” a collection of blush-worthy tunes that take on the themes of gender identity, female power, sex, sex, sex and politics.

“Peaches has always been able to use her outré, sometimes downright silly, personality to shed light on real issues, like society’s patriarchal disgust at the natural state of a woman’s body,” the critic writes. “She may be the only female pop musician working today who sings about sex while firmly and intentionally diverting the objectifying male gaze. While it may not always be pretty or elegant, it’s damn necessary, and Rub does an excellent job of it.”

Mac DeMarco Lives Up to His Wild Reputation at the Troc

UPDATE [10/14/2015, 2:47 pm]: Philly YouTuber Amber Leigh captured the moment when Mac DeMarco dove from the upper-level balcony at the Troc onto the crowd of fans on the first floor. Check it out below. His ascent to the upper level begins around the 8:50 mark.

ORIGINAL: When Mac DeMarco’s fans show up to one of his gigs, there’s expectation thick in the air. The likable 25-year-old singer songwriter is known for his dreamy, slackery ballads that wax wistful over love, longing and pain. But, he and his bandmates are also known for a progressive hedonism that blooms sloppily onstage throughout their concerts. In the past, he’s been hammered during his set, or nude on stage, or touched private parts of fellow musicians, and initiated lots of crowd-surfing. Not necessarily all in one show. But you get the idea. His fans pay attention. And things did get messy and awesome at the end of last night’s sold-out Troc show.  But first …

Eighty-two drag performers in enough wigs, lashes and fake boobs to circle the planet eight times gathered at the Trocadero last night to break the Guinness World Record for Largest Drag Queen Show. And they did it! The current record stands at 55, which was achieved this July at Axis Nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. But our gals blew that one out of the water.

Organizer Brittany Lynn says getting that many drag queens together was no easy feat. She started with over 100, but that number whittled down throughout the rehearsal process. “I got some of the craziest excuses,” she tells me. “Two queens called the night of the show to say they were in South Philly and couldn’t make it because it would take them two hours to walk to the Troc.”
