Though its strip-mall location is short on charm, this cult-favorite Korean spa is worthy of a visit thanks to its lineup of body scrubs, massages (they’ll tiptoe on your back by request) and reflexology, all of which ring in under $100. Services come with a pass for the spa’s facilities, which include herbal steam baths, a charcoal room and a dry sauna. Pro tip: Prepare to strip down; most guests unwind in the buff. 41 Cheltenham Avenue, Cheltenham Read more »
Good hair days, guaranteed. | iStock.
For women of color, getting our hair done at the salon is a gamble. Many upscale salons and spas often aren’t equipped to handle our unique hair needs — tangling, shrinkage, et al. Even those who claim to know black hair might not have the right arsenal of products, or might overlook the potential long-term damage of repeated chemical processing or exposure to extreme temperatures.
Among the vast crop of awesome Philly salons are some that specialize in natural hair. We pored through reviews and websites, chatted with owners and painstakingly whittled down our list to six of Philly’s top-rated hair salons for natural and textured hair, from the Dominican blowout queens to the highly skilled Caribbean braiding parlors. Snow day pampering. | Image via The Rittenhouse Spa.
Your pre-snow day checklist: Stock up at Whole Foods tonight (they’re closed tomorrow!), prepare a Netflix binge-watch list, move your car if it’s parked on a snow emergency route, get your shovels and snowblowers ready, and then book yourself a freaking massage. Seriously: The Rittenhouse Spa is open tomorrow, and it’s offering snowed-in locals 20 percent off massages, facials and body treatments all day.
My advice? Do some preliminary shoveling early on in the day, and then soothe tired muscles with a massage. See? Your snow day just got a whole lot better. Read more »
We’re barely two weeks into our new normal – freezing, winter-like temps – and already we’re noticing the telltale signs of cold weather: dry, flaky, scaly skin. Because pumpkins and apples work just as well in the spa. | Shutterstock.
With the darker, cooler days of fall fast approaching and the conclusion of beach season, sometimes we start to get a bit lazy in the beauty department. Goodbye to that regular mani-pedi, beach waves and sun-kissed tan and hello to nail breakage, brittle locks and a pale computer glow — yikes.
Amend your negligent ways and treat yourself to some off-the-clock pampering with these fall-themed treatments offered by our favorite spas, because you deserve to look and feel your best all year round. (Bonus: The pumpkin spice one has way less calories than its Starbucks counterpart.) Read more »

Your new favorite relaxation spot. | Image via Primp & Play.

I couldn’t help but have a knee-jerk reaction to the news that a new kid-friendly spa was opening in Philly. I can’t quite pinpoint what didn’t sit right, but it had something to do with sending the wrong message to little (very little) girls and boys about external beauty … and maybe also a little something to do with Honey Boo Boo. But then I actually read the press release and found myself getting excited because this wasn’t shaping up to be your typical Toddlers and Tiaras type of place. And my recent visit confirmed just that. Read more »

Our fearless four. | Photo by Lauren McGrath.
Lately, I’ve noticed something around the halls here at Philly Mag. Staffers — lots of them — made some huge hair changes over the summer. Women with long, long hair suddenly went short, and most did it with little to no fanfare: one day, shoulder- or waist-grazing locks; the next, bobs, lobs and bangs. Four staffers, though, stand out for the biggest, boldest changes this season, and (spoiler) each of them look fantastic. Check out their before-and-afters below, find out where they went, and get inspired to change up your ‘do for fall. After all, as one newly shorn staffer said, “It’s just hair!” Read more »
