South Philly craft beer mecca Devil’s Den is celebrating tart, funky sour beers next week: in honor of this year’s Sour Beer Fest, they’re pouring more than 60 varieties from August 12th to August 20th.
Tart fans will have a new home base when Teddy Sourias’ (BRU Craft & Wurst, U-Bahn, Uptown Beer Garden) new bar, Cinder opens at 1500 Locust Street this summer. The bar will capitalize on the exploding popularity of sours, goses, wild ales and ciders. A wood-fired oven will turn out rustic pizzas in what Sourias is calling his most food-focused concept to date.
The 2,400 square foot bar takes over the space that formerly was home to Wolf Market, just up the street from Fado and across the street from Misconduct Tavern. If all goes well, the bar, complete with custom copper piped beer system and custom-built wood-fired oven will open in late June or early July. The bar will have capacity for 65-75 people with additional seating on Locust Street. The bar will be situated to the right of the entrance with high-top tables along the front windows. The dining area will be in the center of the room and the open kitchen will be to the left. The space will also have a smaller dining area available for a chef’s table or private dining.
Saturday, August 15th marks the kick off of Devil’s Den’s annual Pucker Up! Sour Fest. For the weekend, the entire draft selection at the bar (17 in all) will be dedicate to funky sour beers. Then through Friday, August 21st, the bar will continue to offer a rotating selection of sour beers on eight of the taps.
The lineup will include over 50 tart beers throughout the week, including award winning beers as well as rarities like:
- Yards 20th Anniversary Sour
- Bruery Tart of Darkness
- Weyerbacher Tarte Nouveau
- Dogfish Head Festina Peche
- And five sours from Free Will Brewing Co.

Swap your summer pilsners and pale ales for something with a little more tang. Devil’s Den will soon be serving beers that are sour, tart, bitter and sharp. Beginning Saturday, August 16th until Friday, August 22nd, the gastropub will be celebrating their 5th Annual Sourfest. For seven days one draft tower will be completely devoted to sour beers. That’s a total of 8 lines and plenty of sours to try throughout the week.
In keeping with the celebration, Tuesday August 19th, Don Russell, better known as Joe Sixpack, will be hosting a sour tasting and brewing class. Devil’s Den will serve as your classroom as you learn the fine techniques behind preparing a pucker worthy brew. All students will also enjoy appetizers and a tasting of six different sour beers such as Free Will Peach Lambic, Bruery Oude Tart, Barren Hill Berliner Weisse, Bom Wild & Funky #1, Allagash Confluence and Tilquin Gueze. The class is $35 per person and tickets can be purchased at the bar or online.

We got the last minute details on Vedge’s sour beer dinner that is set for tonight. The dinner features beers from 12 Percent Importers and is $85 per person. The only seating for the dinner is 7 p.m.
Devil’s Den in South Philly is the latest bar to go bonkers for sour beers. Running from Saturday, August 17th through Friday, August 23rd, the South Philadelphia bar is holding its fourth annual Pucker Up Sourfest. Sixteen draft lines will be dedicated to sour beers on Saturday and the remainder of the week, at least half of the draft lines at Devil’s Den will offer sour beers. These sour beers are rare, some brewed only once, some off season, others are just handpicked by owner Erin Wallace because they are just the funky, tart, sour, and lip-puckering flavor you would want from a sour beer.
Pucker up sour beer lovers. City Tap House has an event for you tomorrow. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the University City beer bar will be offering lambics, American wild ales, Flemish Reds and Berlinner Weises. $30 tasting packages will be available that will get you a Sour Saturday glass and ten drink tokens. A little hesitant on getting your tart on? City Tap House is also offering pay-as-you-go options.
This Sunday, August 4th, 12 Steps Down will host a wheat and sour beer festival. The fun begins at 4 p.m. and runs all night.
