Your Weekend Workout Playlist: Un-Halloween Halloween Tunes

It being Halloween and all, we couldn’t not do a Halloween-esque playlist. But at the same time, I’m pretty darn sure you’re going to get your fill of “Monster Mash” and “Thriller” tonight wherever your Halloween revelry takes you. So we’re thinking a bit outside the box for this one, with songs about darkness (or played by The Darkness, because duh), magic, ghosts, psychos and more. In some cases, you may not even want to puzzle through our logic—just go with it.

This is the un-Halloween Halloween Playlist you’ve been hoping someone would put together.

Your Weekend Workout Playlist: Girl Bands vs. Boy Bands

I’m pretty sure this week’s playlist needs no introduction. If you’re here, it probably means you’re some kind of latent NSYNC or TLC or Destiny’s Child fan, am I right?

I sure am, except for the latent part: I am very, extremely, outgoingly proud of my undying love for both boy and girl bands. And since I don’t like choosing favorites, I decided to put them together into one giant playlist.

You’re welcome.

Your Weekend Workout Playlist: Throwback to 1994

1994

If you’re anything like me, you’re going to be shocked when you realize that the music below is 20 years old. Twenty years! How has it possibly been that long?!

The good news is, 1994 was a good year for music. It was the year of Green Day (Dookie!), Ace of Base, Notorious B.I.G, Beck (“I’m a loser baby…”), Weezer, TLC and more. So jam out to these throwback tunes during your workout this weekend. And go ahead—sing ‘em at the top of your lungs.

Your Weekend Workout Playlist: Sing-Out-Loud Karaoke Favorites

This week’s playlist was a real team effort, you guys. Earlier today, I asked Philly Mag staffers to send their favorite karaoke songs for a singalong edition of our weekly playlist series and, my goodness, did they deliver. The query actually ignited quite the conversation about which karaoke song is the BEST karaoke song, but I’ll let you peruse our selections below and decide.

As the headline implies, this playlist meant to get you to sing aloud. Like, actually out loud while you work out. Have you ever done it? People will look at you like you are insane, but it’s totally worth it because there is no better way to have a blast while you run, spin, burpee, whatever than by singing aloud as you do it. I promise.

So check out this week’s genre- and decade-spanning playlist, clear your throat, and Belt. It. Out. Your adoring public awaits.

Your Weekend Workout Playlist: Readers’ Choice

Earlier this week, we asked readers on the blog, Facebook and Twitter to share their favorite workout songs for a massive readers’ choice playlist for this week’s lineup of sweat-able tunes. We got lots of great responses from Robyn’s “Hang with Me” (well, anything Robyn, actually) to Eminem’s “Shake That” to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

So without further ado, here are your picks for nearly three (!!) hours of sweating your face off.

Your Weekend Workout Playlist: Songs That Get Stuck in Your Head

Sorry for what I’m about to do, you guys: This week’s playlist is two hours of songs that are pretty much guaranteed to get stuck in your head. The good news is, all the songs are awesome, which means having them stuck in your head, on repeat, isn’t totally a bad thing.

I got some outside input on this one, so the songs really span generations and genres: the Grease soundtrack’s “Summer Nights,” Boyz II Men’s “Motown Philly,” Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and, the pièce de résistance, Aaron Copeland’s “Rodeo.” (I thought I was pretty clever with that one.)

Enjoy!

Your Weekend Workout Playlist: American Top 40’s Casey Kasem Tribute

Broadcast radio icon Casey Kasem died this week, so it seems fitting to dedicate our workout playlist to his life’s work: the American Top 40 countdown, a radio show he co-founded and hosted for 24 years. Although he passed the torch to Ryan Seacrest in 2004, he continued to make appearances on the show and host spinoffs until his retirement in 2009. In other words, this guy played a lot of music in his day, so today we will do our best to honor his legacy. With music, duh.

The American Top 40 website features archived Top 40 charts through August 2001. I’ve pulled two hours worth of tunes from these archives, so what you have below is basically the most popular, workout-able music of the aughts through today. I think Casey Kasem wouldn’t have had it any other way. And by all means, feel free to crank up the volume and do The Sprain in his honor.
