THEATER REVIEW: Girl Seeks Wedded Bliss in Mazeppa’s Sweet Charity

“Hey, Big Spender! Spend… a little time with me.”

Few theater moments are as surefire as this one. As conceived by original director/choreographer Bob Fosse — to a killer song by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields — the line of dance hall hostesses provocatively staring us down is guaranteed to raise an audience’s blood pressure.  It sure does here, as the young female ensemble deliver “Big Spender” with all the brio and loucheness you could hope for.

The song comes early in the show, and it’s an auspicious beginning for Mazeppa Productions’ enjoyable Sweet Charity, which largely lives up to the promise. Read more »

PHOTOS: Gays and Allies Flipping Cups and Raising Coins at Field House

On Friday night, beer-chugging revelers gathered at Field House for a good ol’ fashioned flip-cup championship to raise funds for National Multiple Sclerosis Society and gay-run theater company Mazeppa Productions. Co-organizer and Chatterblast co-founder Matthew Ray tells me that at least 300 people showed up to play (45 teams) and watch, and that $10,000 was raised. That’s about $4,000 more than was raised at last year’s inaugural event.

A new show is coming to Voyeur this Saturday that’s prefaced with a bold warning: “Not for the faint at heart or easily offended!” Bev, one of Philly’s best rising drag personalities, will put on a show fittingly called “We’ll See You In Hell.” No joke is off-limits. Everything is on the table.
