In partnership with SMITH Magazine’s Six-Word Memoir Projectwe asked you to submit your queer life stories—succinctly. Every day until we run out, we will present the most touching, poignant and hilarious entries in meme form.

Today, go-getter Philly journalist Sandy Smith. Sandy writes for all kinds of Philly media outlets, including Philly Mag’s news and Property blogs, but you can usually find him blogging away on his main gig, the Philadelphia Real Estate Blog, where he reports on everything from new city construction to historic, hidden architectural gems.

Sandy’s meme actually finishes up our LGBT Six-Word Memoir of the Day postings. (Tear.) To check out all the ones we’ve done so far, click here. We’ll also be putting the collection into an album on our Facebook page very soon. Thanks for following along. We’ve had a blast doing these.

LGBT Six-Word Memoir of the Day: Van Nguyen

VAN NGUYENIn partnership with SMITH Magazine’s Six-Word Memoir Projectwe asked you to submit your queer life stories—succinctly. Every day until we run out, we will present the most touching, poignant and hilarious entries in meme form.

Today, Philly activist and educator Van Nguyen, who, just this year, made This Is H.O.W. and We Happy Trans‘s national Trans 100 list for the work she’s done in town to raise awareness about transgender issues. When she’s not teaching or protesting, Van performs with the Liberty City Kings Drag and Burlesque troupe (LiCK). They just so happen to have a busy weekend ahead, so if you want to catch her in action they’ll be at Penn City Roller Derby’s Knock Down, Drag Out! on Friday in West Philly; and at Tabu on Saturday, where LiCK is throwing a food-themed Queer and Kinky Cabaret.

Today, one of our few action memes, and the first about being a gay parent. It features Eric Manas (pictured, left), a Philly drug researcher who has been practicing aikido — and kicking ass, apparently — for more than 20 years. He has two daughters he raises with his partner Chris (who we should mention is not the guy getting flipped in this photo.)

PHOTOS: G Philly‘s LGBT Six-Word Memoir Slam

A week ago today, at Christ Church Neighborhood House in Old City, we hosted our first-ever evening of storytelling at G Philly’s LGBT Six-Word Memoir Slam. The event was in conjunction with our LGBT Six-Word Memoir Project, which we began this summer in an effort to collect the stories of Philly’s vibrant LGBT community. We laughed and cried as some of the entries rolled in, but there was nothing quite like being able to hear some of them being discussed out loud at the slam.

Today, former Tabu general manager Freddy Shelley. Besides being a snappy dresser, Shelley is a prolific do-gooder. He set records for organizing fundraising events at Tabu, including this year’s Cupid’s Undie Run, which raised nearly $5K for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Now I’d say that’s good-karma foreshadowing.
