Coaching Buzz: Gruden, Kelly And Arians

A lot of talk among Eagles fans right now is focused not on the team’s Week 10 game against the Cowboys, but rather who the next head coach could potentially be.

While we need to acknowledge that there are still eight games remaining, and that Andy Reid is under contract through 2013, it’d be foolish to ignore the buzz about head-coaching candidates that is already building.

Birds 24/7 is, after all, a blog for the people.

So from time to time, we’ll round up links and information about names you should know.

Without further ado…

When It Comes To QB Situation, Lurie Can Assert Power

Lurie has granted Reid final say on football matters in the name of stability, but stability is already 30 miles down the road. This baby is about to get shaken up. Reid and the players’ peace-of-mind is secondary to the viability of this franchise moving forward.

Which brings us to the quarterback situation.

Report: Roseman Received Contract Extension

Eagles general manger Howie Roseman received a four-to-five year contract extension in June, according to a report.

Jeffrey Lurie gave Roseman the deal when Joe Banner stepped down as team president. The timing is significant because it suggests Lurie views Roseman’s performance in a different category than that of Andy Reid. As has been well-documented, Lurie said before the season that an 8-8 record would not be good enough for Reid to remain the head coach in 2013.

But based on the report, it seems likely that Roseman will be part of Lurie’s brain trust in picking a new head coach if he does in fact part ways with Reid after the season.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Lurie, Listen To the Linc

Much of the focus has been on the win/loss record.

Jeffrey Lurie said 8-8 would not be good enough for Andy Reid to keep his job. At 3-4, the head coach is not on a track towards “substantial improvement.” As the weeks peel off the calendar, we keep our eyes on the standings, and wonder what the owner thinks of it all.

We should be using our ears as well.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: A Franchise Seeking Stability

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidSometimes, it’s important to take a step back and look at the big picture.

After the Eagles’ 30-17 loss to the Falcons Sunday, I was thinking about the state of the franchise. From 1999-2009, the first 11 years of Andy Reid’s tenure here, you often heard the word “stability” associated with the Eagles.

A team in contention pretty much every season. Eight playoff berths. Six division titles. Five NFC title games. And one Super Bowl appearance. An established record of consistency and winning, even if they never quite brought the Lombardi Trophy home.

The results in those 11 years make what’s happened in the past two rather remarkable.

Reid’s Season Appears Headed For Disaster

Jeffrey Lurie put a number on it.

When asked before the season what he needed to see from Andy Reid this year, the Eagles’ owner used the words “substantial improvement.” He was asked to clarify. Would another 8-8 mark be good enough? Lurie said no.

And so that has been the number in the back of everyone’s head all season. With Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, the Eagles are now 3-4 with nine to play.

What They’re Saying About the Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidEagles coach Andy Reid is taking a pounding from the national media this week. Here’s a roundup of what they’re saying.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Drastic Move Coming From Reid?

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidAndy Reid’s fate in Philadelphia will be determined by what happens in the next 10 games.

Owner Jeffrey Lurie put a number on it during his preseason address, confirming that another 8-8 year would not be enough for the head coach to stay.

That means the Eagles need to go at least 6-4 (possibly 7-3) for Reid to stay put.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think Reid is overly concerned with his job security. If Lurie does let him go, he’ll find a job elsewhere. But yesterday’s comments made Reid sound very much like a guy who is willing to do something drastic during the bye week to get his team on track.

Michael Vick Reacts To Lurie Declaration

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Michael VickEagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has stated publicly on two different occasions now that last season was unacceptable and a repeat performance would not be tolerated. On Thursday, during his annual state-of-the-team address, he said that he needs to see “substantial improvement” in 2012.

Michael Vick was asked what that means to him.

“It means he wants to see significant improvement,” said Vick with a laugh. “I didn’t need to hear that because I know exactly what we’re facing, what we want to accomplish this season. If that’s not the goal, then what is it?”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Lurie Calls 2011 a ‘Catch-Up Year’

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidIt’s tough to get an exact read on what Jeffrey Lurie’s expectations were in 2011.

The simplest way to put it is probably this: The Eagles owner was disappointed with the results, but he understands why the team wasn’t more successful.

“It didn’t create the kind of season we expected last year,” Lurie said Thursday, after mentioning how the team added Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Evan Mathis and Jason Babin last summer. “But we didn’t do it for a single year advancement. We did it for the long term and how to elevate a team. That was a unique chance to do that.”

Lurie Sidesteps Castillo Question

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan CastilloWith so many other topics to cover – Andy Reid, Michael Vick, Joe Banner – it took until the final question of Jeffrey Lurie’s press conference for someone to mention Juan Castillo.

Luckily, though, our boy McManus was able to ask the owner about the Eagles’ defensive coordinator. And his response was telling.

Is Lurie comfortable with Castillo? Does he feel he is the right man for the job?

Lurie: Eagles Need More From Vick

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael VickThe fact that Eli Manning has quarterbacked two Super Bowl teams in the last two seasons is not lost on Jeffrey Lurie.

He has long appreciated Tom Brady and got an up-close view of the quarterback’s ability in Super Bowl XXXIX.

Aaron Rodgers? Drew Brees? Lurie called them “some of the greatest players ever to play football.”

It was a long way of getting to his point: If the Eagles are going to be a Super Bowl team this season, it will be on the back of Michael Vick.

Agent: If Lurie is the Owner, Reid is the Coach

If you are of the belief that Andy Reid needs to have a standout year in order to secure his future in Philadelphia, you might not want to hear what Reid’s agent had to say on the subject.

Speaking to a small group of reporters at Lehigh Saturday, Bob LaMonte said that owner Jeffrey Lurie has given him every indication that Reid is the Eagles coach for as long as he wants the gig. Or at least as long as Lurie is calling the shots.

“He has stated again and again any time that I’ve been with him, that as long as he was the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid would be his head coach,” said LaMonte. “I would say the proof is in the pudding; he’s been here for 14 years.”

Report: Jeffrey Lurie Retains ‘Full Control’ of Eagles

The terms of Jeffrey Lurie‘s divorce settlement ensures he will retain full control over the Eagles, per Albert Breer of the NFL Network.

According to Breer, the New York Post report suggesting Christina Lurie would receive a “sizeable chunk” of the team was overstated.
