Eagles Wake-Up Call: Offseason Shouldn’t Center Around Foles

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. The Eagles should plan on continuing to develop Nick Foles in the offseason. But they shouldn’t anoint him the quarterback of the future and shut the door on the position when shaping their roster in the coming months.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Will Birds’ Job Attract Candidates?

When Jeffrey Lurie and his circle of trusted advisers decide on a head-coaching target this offseason, chance are, they could have some competition.

While there are still five games to go, we all know these are the final days with Andy Reid. But the Eagles are just one of several teams that could be looking for a new head coach.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, who worked previously as a scout for the Eagles, Ravens and Browns, recently took a look at 11 potential head-coaching jobs that could be open this offseason. He ranked the positions based on personnel, from most attractive to least attractive. Here’s what he came up with.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Failures In Self-Evaluation

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidOver the years, Andy Reid has often said it’s his responsibility to put players in positions to succeed.

The response generally elicits an eye-roll from fans and reporters alike.

But perhaps there is actually something to it. Or more accurately, perhaps a major reason why the Eagles have struggled to an 11-15 record in their last 26 games is because they have failed to acknowledge the limitations of some of their players. In a few key areas, Reid, Howie Roseman and company have wrongly assessed what players are capable of.

Coaching Buzz: Gruden, Kelly And Arians

A lot of talk among Eagles fans right now is focused not on the team’s Week 10 game against the Cowboys, but rather who the next head coach could potentially be.

While we need to acknowledge that there are still eight games remaining, and that Andy Reid is under contract through 2013, it’d be foolish to ignore the buzz about head-coaching candidates that is already building.

Birds 24/7 is, after all, a blog for the people.

So from time to time, we’ll round up links and information about names you should know.

Report: Roseman Received Contract Extension

Eagles general manger Howie Roseman received a four-to-five year contract extension in June, according to a report.

Jeffrey Lurie gave Roseman the deal when Joe Banner stepped down as team president. The timing is significant because it suggests Lurie views Roseman’s performance in a different category than that of Andy Reid. As has been well-documented, Lurie said before the season that an 8-8 record would not be good enough for Reid to remain the head coach in 2013.

But based on the report, it seems likely that Roseman will be part of Lurie’s brain trust in picking a new head coach if he does in fact part ways with Reid after the season.

Howie Roseman Talks Rolle, Fletcher Cox

Howie Roseman explained the move to cut Brian Rolle and sign linebacker Adrian Moten during his hit on the Eagles website Tuesday.

“Well we’ve got to improve on special teams,” said Roseman. “Our backup players — Jamar Chaney right now is our backup WILL linebacker behind Akeem Jordan — so those other roster spots have to play well on special teams. We’re looking for an upgrade in that area. Adrian came in last year and played well on special teams, played well for us during the preseason for us on special teams, and we’re looking for improvement in that area.”

Roseman Talks McBriar Move, Dawkins Tribute

Howie Roseman shed some light on the decision to cut Chas Henry and sign veteran punter Mat McBriar.

The Eagles general manager revealed that they brought McBriar in Tuesday for a workout and noticed notable improvement in his kicks from the preseason. The 33-year-old McBriar is coming off an injury to his non-kicking foot.

“We did see a difference,” Roseman told the team’s website. “He seems healthier and he’s booming the ball now.”
