We’ve been mulling over the news about Gordon Dinerman walking away from his plans for the Fountainhead Saloon at 11th and Tasker for some time now. We knew that something had gone south with the city bureaucracy and that Dinerman had walked away from the whole project (and straight into his deal with Rob LaScala at Barra), but what we didn’t know was what was going to be happening next at 1537 South 11th Street. At least not until now.
Over at Grub Street, they’re reporting that Lee Styer and Jesse Prawlucki of Fond and Belle Cakery signed a lease for the space just last night and are planning on moving Fond out of its current home at 1617 East Passyunk and transporting it right around the corner. This won’t be happening until the fall, but when it does, the new Fond will be opening with more seats, a short bar and a liquor license–which will be a nice improvement.

Barra—Gordon Dinerman‘s re-envisioning of Rob LaScala’s Rocchino’s and Azione on Chestnut Street in Old City–opened for dinner service just a couple weeks ago. And now, the announcement has come down that the big 145-seat space will begin serving lunch tomorrow.
There’s no menu in place yet (which, considering we’re under 24 hours before the first lunch plate hits the table, is a little worrisome), but what we do know is that lunch will be running from 11:30am to 2:30pm (with the kitchen remaining open between 2:30 and Happy Hour, which really means that lunch will be served for a bit longer for you procrastinators), and that the kitchen will be offering a burger and 4 to 6 daily lunch specials.
More details as they come through. Keep an eye on this space.
Gordon Dinerman of Birra has recently helped Rob LaScala turn his Rocchino’s and Azione spots in Old City into one, larger restaurant called Barra. Rocchino’s and Azione were established at 2nd and Chestnut for six months before LaScala turned to Dinerman to relaunch the two as one, which was facilitated by a previous open connection between the two restaurants.

Gordon Dinerman’s Birra is progressing right along. The build-out should be completed shortly and cooking in the space should commence in the week of August 22nd. If all goes to plan they should open right around Labor Day.
Check out the video after the jump to see what the space looks like and what goes into some of the dishes that Dinerman is preparing.
