As finals season approaches, college students are inundated with unpleasant messages from professors like, “don’t start studying the night before” (challenge accepted) and “you really need to have kept up with the reading all semester to do well,” (like, okay, thank you for the world’s least helpful advice because you know no one did that).
But as always, sugary fried food is here to make everything better. Federal Donuts is offering a free hot fresh donut to any college student with an ID who visits their West Philly (3428 Sansom Street) or North Philly (701 N. Seventh Street) shop.
Show your ID during your school’s exam dates (the list is included below and you’re welcome. I’m not saying I’m a hero but I’m not saying I’m not one) and pick between a free Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Strawberry Lavender, or Vanilla Spice donut.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks are a Class A Advanced affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The team plays just off of I-95 and can be a bargain night out for friends and family. But today they are getting all sorts of attention because of the above creation. That my friends is the Wilmington Blue Rocks Krispy Kreme Donut Dog, complete with raspberry jelly, bacon and enough sugary glaze to send you into shock.
The donut will be available at Blue Rocks home games and right now, the team is looking for a name for the Frankenstein-ian creation.
How to name the creation »
Actually, its a test-batch of salted caramel crusted, budino-filled donuts
from Valerie Safran
and Marcie Turney
, who are apparently working on bringing Philly’s donut wars to an entirely new level with the pastry equivalent of an atom bomb.
A delicious, caramel-y, budino-y atom bomb.
ps. These things are totally going to be called “Budinuts,” right?

The Old-Fashioned Chocolate is the shop’s first and only chocolate cake batter donut, so if you know what’s good for you, you should be running out the door now to get your fair share. Federal Donut has shops located in Pennsport, Center City, University City and West Poplar.

The latest location of Federal Donuts is now open at the corner of 7th and Fairmount in the West Poplar neighborhood. It is the biggest Federal Donuts yet, complete with 40-seats, a parking lot and a walk-in refrigerator roughly the same size as the Pennsport original. Business was steady when I checked it out this morning. I was able to try several of the new flavor donuts including a lemon sugar hot donut, chocolate glazed (yes, FedNuts now has chocolate donuts) and a new Thai curry dry-dusted fried chicken.
I was also lucky enough to try the fried chicken donut sandwich that Federal Donuts will be preparing on Saturday, June 7th for their grand opening.

The West Poplar location of Federal Donuts is 2,000 square feet, substantially larger than the other stand-alone FedNuts, seats 40 and even has a parking lot.

The Federal Donuts coming to 3428 Sansom Street is opening shortly. How shortly? According to a tweet from Federal Donuts yesterday, “in fewer days than you can count on two Simpsons hands.” Which if our arithmetic is correct, means the new Federal Donuts will open within eight days, seven as of today. Unless thumbs don’t count, then it’s five.
Counting on Simpson fingers is tougher than it seems.
UPDATE: Just got word that FedNuts West will be opening the doors at 7am on Monday, March 10–which, true to their promise, is a number of days that can be counted on two Simpsons hands.
