DISPATCHES FROM PENNSYLTUCKY: PA Church Kicks Out Young Member for Being Gay

Bobbie Pierce, 20, was kicked out of his church in Newberry Township, Pa., for being gay.

Bobbie Pierce, 20, was kicked out of his church in Newberry Township, Pa., for being gay.

Here we go again. Ambassador’s Bible Chapel in Manchester, Pa., is making headlines this week for revoking the membership of a longtime worshiper because he’s gay. The York Daily Record reports that 20-year-old Bobbie Pierce was removed from the church and denied communion by the establishment’s elders. His renunciation was announced during church service last Sunday. How embarrassing. More from the York Daily Record:

“Pastor David Slautterback said Friday that he and the other elders want Pierce to repent for his sin and to return to fellowship at the church, where he is still welcome to attend as long as he does not cause division or speak contrary to scripture. ‘We placed Bobbie under church discipline out of love for Bobbie and regard for his soul,’ Slautterback said.”

holy ghost prep

Over the weekend we reported the dismal news that Michael Griffin, a gay teacher in Bensalem, Pa., was fired from Holy Ghost Prep after telling his boss that he was going to apply for a license to marry his partner of 12 years. I followed it up with a bland response from the school, in which the school’s employee conduct policy was used as the reason for the firing.

Now the school’s headmaster, James McCloskey, has issued a message that was emailed to alumni and posted on the school’s website. Thanks to former student Robert Nectan Schell for the heads up. It reads as follows:

michael griffin pa school teacher fired for being gayIt takes a lot to drag me to the keyboard to blog on a Saturday, but I heard some news this morning that was so infuriating I had to share. Chris Covone, one of our LGBT Six-Word memoirists, emailed to tell me about a former teacher of his at Holy Ghost Prep in Bensalem, Pa., who “was abruptly fired after filing for a marriage license with his partner of 12 years.” ABC News reports:

Michael Griffin [who has taught French and Spanish at Holy Ghost Prep for 12 years ] says he emailed the principal of Holy Ghost Prep earlier in the week saying he may be late Friday, that he was applying for a marriage license. After an in-service day he says he was called into the office of School President Father James McCloskey, along with Principal Jeffrey Danilak.

DISPATCHES FROM PENNSYLTUCKY: Lehigh Co. Tea Partier Compares Same-Sex Couples to Pets

tom c creighton lehighJust in case today’s news about Corbett comparing gay marriage to incest wasn’t enough to boil your blood, here’s another ignorant statement by Lehigh County Commissioner Tom Creighton, who, according to The Morning Call, said that giving benefits to same-sex couples is akin to the government sending tax-payer dollars to animals:

“The state has a ban on same-sex marriage, so why should the county be offering benefits for same-sex marriage? … I don’t feel the county should be looking for new ways to give away taxpayer money. Next it could be giving money out to people’s pets or whatever. No, it probably won’t go that far.”

I’m going to start a new column calling out all the ridiculousness that’s happening out in Pennsyltucky (aka the reason we are the only Northeast state that doesn’t allow gay marriage). It’s called “Dispatches from Pennsyltucky,” and the first one is about a pastor from Lebanon who’s congregation is all up in arms because he performed a marriage ceremony for his gay son in 2007. His son for God’s sake! In 2007! Pink News reports:
